Present Time 18:02 Thursday, Narita International Airport
You felt the circles being haphazardly drawn onto your back by a familiar hand, while another lovingly stroked your hair as mantras of calm were breathily murmured into your ear. Shinso's gravelly voice centering you as the plane made its final descent. The landing gear startled you as it made contact with the asphalt beneath, clenching your jaw and squeezing your eyes shut harder than you thought possible.
Fuck, I hate airplanes.
When the plane came to a final halt, you let out a long breath you didn't even know you had been holding in. Sitting up, you shyly peaked at Shinso, who was gazing at you with a mixture of emotions you couldn't quite read, but one of them was definitely pity. You could feel it. He had been handling you with gloves for the most part since leaving the hospital hours before your flight, almost like he was afraid of what was about to transpire.
All you cared about were three things:
Lydia was alive. She had some serious damage from the stab wounds, and would be hospitalized for a while in the States before able to go back to I-Island, but she was alive.
The League of Villains attack on you and your friends was enough to gain some interest from a very surprising force. The Hero Commission of Japan. Enough so that they had insisted on you coming to Japan. They were beginning an investigation; which meant they needed your first hand account of what happened, plus they were willing to bet there would be a second attempt on your life. They were to offer you protection and resources in return for a contractual arrangement while they searched for Melissa Shield.
Melissa. You didn't know how, but you were going to find where she was. You were going to save her, if it was the last thing you did.
"So, what do I have to look forward to?" You questioned Shinso as you grabbed your luggage. Stopping momentarily, you pulled the pill bottle from your pocket, shaking two more pills into your hand, then tossing them back. You replaced the bottle into your coat pocket, turning to stare down the indigo haired man until he gave you an honest answer. He was beating around the bush, and he wasn't good at it. He knew something, something he didn't like, which in turn meant you weren't going to like it either.
"Listen, Kitten, I wish I could tell you more, but with the emotions and everyone on high alert right now, they aren't leaking anything unless it is need to know. They haven't told anyone who your new babysitter is yet, just that they want someone other than me-"
"Why?! If you kept me safe this long, why does it have to be someone else? Besides, I am not helpless. I have a strong quirk, I can take care of myself!" Your voice was becoming heated. None of this made sense to you. Toshi was more than capable of being with you, you were starting to question if you made the right decision or not.
"Listen to me, please. They want you with someone else for two reasons: One, I have been traveling with you, and I was present with you at the scene of the incident. That means that the LOV could attempt to use me as a means of finding you. So, it would make more sense to have someone you've never interacted with be your handler," Shinso sighed, opening the taxi door for you, and you scooted into the black SUV the Commission had sent as your transport.
"Did you just say Handler? What the actual fuck, Hitoshi," You growled at the tired man beside you, his vocabulary no exactly sitting right with you. " First its a fucking babysitter, now a goddamn handler. What the hell am I, a child or a fucking rabid animal?" you spat at him.
"This right here, your attitude, is why people say the shit they do about you" Shinso huffed lazily at you, clearly too tired for your temper. "I take you with a grain of salt, because I know that you're all bark, and hardly bite," you growled at him again, tearing your hand away from his grasp, only for him to take your chin and turn you to face him. "However, other people don't see that. They see your record at the Academy. They see the way you handle the press. They see your quirk flare up when you get emotional. They see your family history." you winced at his last comment before finally looking into his eyes. His face was serious, matching his stern tone. Shinso only ever had the best of intentions for you, you knew that, but you were defensive by nature. You sighed, relaxing slightly, nodding against his hand, motioning for him to continue. "Second, because of the person you are, Kitten, they want whoever is to watch over you to be someone who can handle every possible outcome. Each and every one."
"You mean," you hesitated finishing the sentence you knew was going to make you regret setting foot back in Japan.
"Someone who has a chance against your quirk, and someone who can end it at a moment's notice. I can't be that person. I can de-escalate, sure, but it's never a guarantee." Shinso released your face, gripping onto your thigh, hoping you could understand. He didn't want this. He would have much rather stayed by your side, knowing that regardless of what it looked like on paper, he was the best one suited for the job of keeping you safe.
You looked down, watching the rubber toes of your converse kick and poke at the carpeted interior of the SUV. "You think I'm dangerous, don't you?"
"Kitten," Shinso's voice was soft, laced with hurt as his hand squeezed harder on your thigh, his free hand cupping your cheek, thumb softly rubbing away the tears you hadn't realized were leaking from your eyes. You hated crying, but the exhaustion was finally getting to you. "I will never be afraid of you. If there is one thing I have learned about you, it's that you would never be able to kill someone. You couldn't live with the guilt. This idea that they have, that you're a threat, it's all bullshit," you were finally able to meet his gaze, and the only thing you could read in his misty eyes was honesty. Shinso adored you, he thought the world of you, how you could ever doubt that made you feel terrible.
You felt the car come to a halt in front of a large, glass building, as two men approached the car to escort you to the next phase of this new insanity that was becoming your life.
"Now, let's get in there and show those assholes who Hotaru Kobayashi really is." Shinso leaned forward, gently kissing your forehead before releasing you from his grasp and flashing you his trademark smirk.
As long as you're with me, Toshi, I can do anything.
