The weeks following consisted of the same thing, Denki calling me every night as he wasn't able to come to the base and going on missions during the day. It was a cycle I've come to get used to and didn't mind all that much. Denki called me yesterday saying he wanted me to go to his doctor appointment with him this afternoon. He was a little over 3 months at this point and he was going in to get an ultrasound.
I was currently changing into my street clothes so I could go out and get Denki when there was a knock on the door. Tomura walked in seconds later, "Hey kid- you going somewhere?"
"Yeah. Why, what's up?" I asked.
"I was going to ask if you wanted to go out on a mission with Dabi and I." Tomura said before tossing me a file, "I thought you might have fun with it."
I looked through the file and sighed. "This does look like a lot of fun but I can't, this is really important and I can't miss it." I replied, tossing the file back to him.
"Your loss, have fun with whatever you're doing." Tomura said before leaving the room. I finished getting ready and left for UA, texting Denki when I was almost there so I didn't have to stand around outside the gates.
As I approached UA I saw Denki waiting outside, his smile widening when he saw me. Denki ran over to me and wrapped his arms tightly around my waist. "Hey, ready to go?" Denki asked as he looked up at me.
I placed a hand on his head and softly ruffled his hair, "Yep, whenever you are." Denki took my hand and started leading me down the street to the clinic. Once we got there Denki checked himself in and we sat down in the waiting area, Denki constantly bouncing in his chair.
After about 15 minutes of waiting Denki was called back, he grabbed my hand and pulled me along with him. "Hello, Mr. Kaminari. How have you been feeling?" The doctor asked as she led us to the room.
"I've been alright, my morning sickness is basically non existent anymore so that's a plus." Denki replied as he walked into the room. The doctor had Denki sit in the examination chair, telling me to take the chair next to it.
"Is it correct to assume you're the father?" The doctor asked while looking me over. Not wanting to speak I just nodded. The doctor gave me a soft smile, "Perfect. Give me a second to set up then we'll get started on the ultrasound."
It took a few minutes but the doctor finished setting up the machine, bringing it so it was sitting next to Denki. She reached down and grabbed a tube of gel, "Alright, I need you to lift your shirt up for me. Just as a reminder, this'll be a little cold." Denki did as he was told, and that's when I noticed the small swell on Denki's abdomen. I felt my heart skip a beat, questioning how I haven't noticed it until now.
The doctor spread the gel onto Denki's stomach, making him jump a little. Once the gel was applied she grabbed a wand and placed it on the gel to spread it around. She turned the machine on and the sound of a heartbeat filled the room. After about a minute of moving the wand around the doctor smiled, "There we go, finally found 'em. That's your baby and its heartbeat. From what I see you're 14 weeks and everything seems to be normal and healthy."
I could feel tears strat to brim my eyes. I looked down and saw Denki was already crying. Seeing our child on the screen brought the pregnancy to a whole new level of real to me. Of course I knew Denki wasn't lying about being pregnant, but it just feels so odd for it to be so real in this moment.
"Would you like me to get you a picture?" The doctor asked, turning to Denki who eagerly nodded his head. "Alright then, I'll be right back, hang tight."
The doctor left the room and Denki instantly turned to me with a wide grin on his face. "Hear that? Our baby's healthy." Denki said as tears continued to fall down his cheeks.
I placed both of my hands on his cheeks and wiped away the tears. "I did, I'm really happy that everything's alright." I replied as the doctor came back into the room.
"Here's your photo, I want to schedule you for your next appointment a month from now. Does the same tine work?" The doctor asked, handing Denki the photo.
"It does." Denki replied as he grabbed a paper towel and wiped the gel off his stomach.
"Great, you're free to go. Have a great day." The doctor said as she left.
"Can I come back to base with you for a while?" Denki asked while he stood up.
"Of course." I said, joining him. The entire walk back to base Denki was staring at the picture from the ultrasound. He had a wide smile on his face and a shine to his eyes I only ever saw when he was truly happy about something. When we got to base we went right to my room, Denki and I going to rest on the bed.
After a few moments I turned to him and lifted his shirt up over his abdomen. I gently ran my thumb over it while resting my head on Denki's chest. I heard Denki laugh and place a hand on my head, "You alright, Toshi? You've never been one to do this kind of thing."
I looked up at Denki with a soft smile. "How can I not be ok? It's all just a little crazy to me right now. Like, it's fully proven that we're going to be parents. I knew you were pregnant but I guess my mind didn't fully believe it until today. Hell, I didn't even notice you were showing until you pulled your shirt up at the doctors." I replied.
"I don't think it was fully real to me either, I know I had an ultrasound before but for some reason it just didn't stick that I was actually pregnant. Today was kind of just like a wake up call that I'm actually carrying your child. That it's actually real and I'm not just getting fat for no reason." Denki said while softly poking at his stomach.
"You're not fat Denks, but I understand what you're saying. This is actually happening, it's crazy to think about."
"You're going to be a great father." Denki said as he played with my hair.
"You'll be better, you actually have the qualities of a decent human being. I don't." I said, looking back down at Denki's abdomen, "I'm a villain, there's no way I can be a decent dad."
"You being a villain means nothing, Toshi, it's about your personality and how much you care. I can already tell you love our child as much as I do. Just because you're a villain doesn't mean you'll be a bad dad or that I'll be better at this than you. We live in 2 completely different worlds but I think we'll equally struggle with this whole parenting thing. I'm confident we'll figure it out though, just like we always do." Denki said with his signature smile.
"Yeah, you're right. I'm just overthinking things." I replied, leaning down to kiss Denki's stomach, "We're going to give this kid the best life they could possibly dream of."
"No matter what." Denki replied, "I can't wait to start spoiling them."
"Me either, Denks."
