Taylor's pov
"We think it's goes to like a chest or something," Jake said, holding up the lock so the camera could see it.
I came over and stood next to Corey, taking in Sam and Colby's surprised faces as they stared at the lock.
I have come to realize that Colby was an interesting person, with his actions and emotions, at least. He could be a happy, lovable man and next thing you know he's pissy and mean. But maybe there was a reason for it, and not just how he is. I also have to acknowledge I can't ignore it forever.
"It wouldn't be to a door cause it's in a cave, and what are they trying to keep from the other miners? Like what are you trying to keep safe?" Jake reasoned with the boys the same way he had with Corey and I earlier.
"Maybe a dynamite box or something," Sam thought out loud, and I shook my head at him. "No, that wouldn't make sense because there's no reason to lock up your resources,"
"True," He shrugged, glancing over at the mine entrance before his eyes lit up again, "What if it was used to contain silver? LIke they kept the silver in there?"
"OH," Corey smiled, picking up what he was saying quicker than I was.
"What?" I glanced back and forth between the two of them, and Corey responded to my confusion, "When they would find the silver, that would be the chest or box they put it in and lock it,"
I nodded, slowly thinking about how that would work. Why would a box be that deep in a mine? Unless they took donkeys in there with them or something, someone would have to carry that heavy box out of the mine again. But I never got around to researching what they used to pull the silver out of the mines with.
"They box could still be there because we crawled into a cave that collapsed," Jake scratched over his mouth as he talked, seeming nervous to share the information. I thought he was looking at the camera, but I noticed his eyes were focused on what was standing behind it. And that happened to be Colby, who was looking back and forth between the two of us. He would stay quiet for now, but as soon as the camera was put away we'd probably never hear the end of it.
I wasn't expecting Sam to say anything about it, but he did have a smile on his face as he shouted, "Why the fuck would you do that?"
"Is that where you found it?" Colby asked, pointing over at the lock.
"Yeah," Corey and Jake said at the same time, handing it off to me to hold.
"This is a good find," Colby held out his hand to me, and I placed the lock in it so he could show it to the camera, turning it around a couple of times.
"We found one of those rocks that we found earlier, you know how they were all very shiny at the very end of the cave? This one's like super shiny," Sam pointed down to the rock I didn't notice he had in his hand.
It was really cool that we split up and managed to find really cool things. Though I didn't want to make a habit of going off in groups to search for things, because we might not always be so lucky.
"You know how he said silver is heavy?" Colby asked, and Corey grabbed the rock, "Yeah."
"Wait, Jake put the light back on it," I said when he took it off, and once he shined it back I spoke again, "Look how glittery it is," I pointed, running my finger over it to see if any of the shine would rub off. Not to my surprise, it didn't.
"And it's green," He added, "But is this really heavier than a rock this size?"
"I think it's pretty heavy," Colby said.
"You're also very weak, so that does not say much," I told him, then winked to show I was teasing.
"Did you see the way he was holding that heavy ass silver earlier?" Corey asked us, not looking up from the rock, "I'd say he's pretty strong,"
"Thank you," Colby said, appreciating the support his friend was giving him.
"But his pull-out game on the other hand," Corey continued, "Not so strong,"
I glanced back and forth between the two boys before laughing, covering my mouth with a hand.
"I thought you were on my side!" Colby whined, crossing his arms.
"I love how he doesn't even deny it," Jake smiled, shining his flashlight down at Colby's pants.
"He would know," Colby shrugged, and I glanced over at Sam, who was just recording the entire thing.
Jake's mouth popped open, and he also crossed his arms, "That's not fair,"
"I told you he gets aroused when you come over with Chipotle, you just wouldn't listen," Corey said before laughing mischeviously.
"Is that what all that noise was the other day from your room?" Sam asked quietly, looking over at Colby.
"I call it a sex dungeon for a reason," I smiled over at Sam before glancing over at the rock again.
"But you don't think this is silver, do you?" Corey said, glancing up at us for the first time during this conversation, "What if you guys found the vein?"
"Highly unlikely," I shrugged, "Someone has probably been in that mine recently, maybe even the last owners of Cerro Gordo, so it probably would have been found by one of them. And didn't Brent say it had collapsed?" I reasoned, looking at all the boys. It was weird to look at the camera, as if I was making eye contact with thousands of people who would be watching this when we got back and it was edited.
"Way to believe in us," Sam thanked sarcastically, "But maybe," He looked at the camera with a pursed smile on his face.
"We found possibly silver and an old rusted lock. These are great finds," Colby held them both in his hands and showed them to the camera.
"We found so much today!" Sam exclaimed, adjusting the camera so he could clap quickly.
"Seriously though!" Corey shouted, "Can y'all believe we found this on our first treasure hunt? And this is Taylor's first adventure with us, too,"
"Yeah it is," I smiled over at him, "This has actually been a lot of fun,"
I know I sounded stupid or selfish because of my simple response, but I didn't know how else to describe it.
"If this is silver, we did it. We did it, guys. That was our goal, like, we came here to find silver and..." Colby trailed off, shaking the possible silver in his hand to prove his point.
"We found a lot of stuff, we have definitely been good treasure hunters," Sam looked around at the four of us, seeming to be proud even though he accomplished the same things as us.
"Do good treasure hunters get to go to bed?" Jake asked, stifling a yawn.
"You guys wanna head back?" Colby asked, but his eyes stayed on me. Even though I was more than fully clothed, the look made me feel like I was naked.
"Yeah, let's go back," Sam said, and began walking back in the direction of the bunkhouse and the rest of the ghost town. It would be easier to get back since we could see the edge of one of the buildings from here.
I walked next to Corey, not really concerned with what Colby was doing. I didn't know when one of them would pick up the camera next to film something, and I didn't want to be by Colby just in case.
Maybe I was being a little too extreme about it, but I seriously did not want to hurt Colby's image because he was caught hanging out with a girl like me. A girl who is known as "the friend of that one tiktoker"
Also deep down, I did not want to be that girl anymore. I want to make a name for myself.
And I'll find a way to do it on my own.
