~ Ivar's POV ~
Sometimes I still cannot believe Jasper willingly puts himself through this. To repeat high school education, with a bunch of adolescent humans, over and over again seems like torture. I think in part, maybe he is seeing this torture as some type of punishment for his past crimes. While going to smaller towns is a good idea, as they have less students, it must still be hell on an empath to be so surrounded by raging hormones and fluctuating emotions. Then again, after he has learned to master being in school, he will probably have some of the best control around mortals than any of our kind.
Then again, I am standing here holding a backpack in preparation for our first school day in Forks, so I am a pot calling a kettle black. I personally don't have much trouble with mortals, but I do struggle with being confined to a school, either learning pointless new things, or hearing a teacher spout incorrect or false history. I also dislike being around the little child teens blushing at each of us, hearing them talk about us shamelessly or gossiping non-stop. I just have to remind myself, I am doing this for my friend, to help him in his new way of life.
"Here, wear this today!" Alice shouts excitedly from upstairs as she throws me a new jacket.
"What is wrong with the coat I am wearing?" I ask her wearily eyeing the rather nice looking leather jacket in my hands.
"That coat is an ill-fitting trench coat. And it's Emmett's." She says with disgust, her usual attitude towards when I steal Emmett's clothes and don't wear the ones she gets for me. She hates that I care little for mortal fashion. "You will look great in this new jacket, and you can thank me later." She trills off mysteriously and runs off to finish getting ready for school.
I sigh as I replace the jacket. I will admit, it is a nice fitting coat, forming well to me as I twist and move in it. It probably also blends in better with the weather, since it is not yet cold enough for the wool trench I had been wearing.
As we all start to pile into our cars, I take a look at Jasper. "Are you ready for this?" I ask him in a low voice, so the other don't hear.
"I am." Jasper says with only a little confidence. "We hunted last night, and you and I already took a quick walk through the school to get acclimated to the scents. I know it'll be intense, but I feel as prepared as I'm going to get." He grimaces slightly before shaking it off. "Thank you, again, for being here with me. It still means the world to me." He adds sincerely to me, making me smile softly at him.
"No worries my friend. Although the school experience I could do without, it gives me a purpose to help you out in your control." I say to him with honesty, as I really had nothing much else going on recently. Or ever, really.
When I received a letter from Jasper 30 years ago, saying that he had not only found his mate, but also joined a new coven and changed his diet, I was intrigued to see my friend again. I paid him a visit, which at that time they were living in upstate New York. I could see that he was happy in having found his mate but was struggling with the coven's vegetarian diet.
I made the decision to stay by his side and help him adjust better, especially after he had just had a recent relapse with a few mortals in a town mall not far away from the coven's home. The Cullen's had managed to cover it up well, but I could see how the guilt was tearing away at Jasper's soul. I could also see the love and acceptance of many of the coven though, and I knew he had found a good clan to call home.
It was also nice to see Carlisle Cullen again after a couple hundred years. I had last seen him in Volterra, when he was living there. So, I made the decision to help my friend out, and requested from Carlisle that I temporarily stay with his coven, until such time as Jasper is more comfortable with their way of life. He had graciously agreed to it, on the condition that I too convert my diet. I had already planned on that, as it would be the easiest way to help my friend out. Suffer together, and all that.
