Habiba's POV:
My heart was pounding like danger was looming somewhere; as I approached the door, I was scared to take a step in with the fear of the reaction I was going to meet everyone with; how would I explain myself for coming home so late? What will I tell everyone when they ask about my exams?
"Ma'am, You're back!" Emma yells as she rushes to me; she quickly takes my handbag.
"Welcome!" She adds with a smile.
"How's everyone? Are they worried?" I asked.
"Worried?" She utters in a confused tone.
"Yeah, Grandma and the rest, I hope they aren't too alarmed?"
"Why will they be ma'am? Everyone is fine." She smiled.
"Oh! She is back." Mother-in-law joins us at the door.
Happiness was displayed on her face as if she just won the lottery, but bet me, her happiness sent shivers down my spine because her happiness always cost me my happiness.
"You're back? How was your exam?" Mother-in-law asks while maintaining a smile; the rest join us not too long.
Surprisingly, none of them looked worried nor did they look scared to see me return by this dark hour.
"It... was fine." I stuttered while observing their faces which held no fear or worry.
"You're sure? You wrote well?" Mother-in-law asked with a lingering smile.
"Yeah, it was perfect," I replied with a smile which made her stare at me for a couple of seconds.
Was she expecting me to cry that I had failed? No! Never!
"Wow!" She sighed.
"Yes Mother, and I hope I continue to succeed and my enemies are put to shame."
"Huh?" She snorted feeling attacked.
"Nothing, just saying." I smiled.
"Oh, Habiba, I'm glad you were able to do your screening. That's a good sign you had done well in your exam. I hope you didn't stress a lot, and I hope you had something to eat throughout the day?" Grandma says as she joins us with a proud smile, but I am a bit confused.
"What screening?" I muttered trying to figure out what she was talking about.
I didn't even sit for the exams, not to talk more about participating in the screening.
"Yes, your screening. Abdul called us earlier and told us you won't be returning home due to the screening, and he assured us to drop you off when you're done. Did you return together?" She asked.
"Yes... I say, my voice trailing off in heavy thoughts.
Abdul lied to them to cover for me?
He has done me a huge favour by taking care of me, and now this, without his help I have no idea how I would have tackled not disappointing everyone. What do I do without him? I must thank him.
"Grandma, Abdul just dropped me off and returned home; you know it's late so he couldn't come in." I smiled.
"Oh, okay, I'm grateful to him; thank him for me next time you meet."
"Sure, Grandma, I would love to go to bed early; I will be leaving early for school tomorrow."
"Oh, that's great, sleep well."
"I will and you too, good night." I waved while my mother-in-law kept on a sly smirk as she watched me leave.
