You were warned just how demanding your new boss could be. Everyone in the company stressed how meticulous he was with work, but you still went in with an optimistic attitude, thinking that keeping a bright disposition was all you needed to succeed at anything.
You were quick to learn that optimism isn't always the answer, especially when it comes to working for Mr. Min. He was a perfectionist who combed over every tiny detail until they aligned with his standard of quality. Mr. Min was an intimidating guy, and with your lack of experience, it was evident that you were ill-equipped, but since the pay was a lot better than your previous job, you were determined to put in every ounce of effort into the job.
"Y/n," Mr. Min calls for you, his usual monotone present in his voice.
You immediately go to him, sporting a broad smile on your face. "Yes, sir?"
His blank expression was always hard to read and you never knew if he was in a good mood. Well, "good mood" was a long-shot when referring to Mr. Min.
"Make sure to prepare the finance team for this afternoon's meeting. We're to meet with a new investor later this week and I want to make sure they're prepared." He says, barely glancing up from his computer screen while speaking.
Min Yoongi was always focused, barely showing any emotion while working. It used to make you nervous, but you've grown used to it. You had no choice in the matter, but his calm and collective attitude acted like an anchor for your more haphazard approach to corporate life.
"Of course, I'll let them know right away." You reply in a cheery tone before leaving.
You don't know why he hired you–neither of your personalities were similar. Mr. Min was very serious, almost cold in the way he carried himself while you were a bright optimist. Everyone in the office calls Mr. Min an icy storm while referring to you as a summer sun. It's an odd pair if you must say so yourself, but it never hindered either of your work ethics. You accompanied him to a lot of work related meetings. He often relies on your cheery attitude to make things run smoothly. Polar opposites upon first impressions, but your common ground with Mr. Min is that you aim to get the job done to the best of your ability.
After relaying Mr. Min's message to the finance team, you go back to your desk to find a bouquet of flowers on your desk. You look at the note, surprised that it's addressed to you.
A quizzical look crosses your face since there's no name for the sender. You think of who might be behind this, but come up blank.
"Keep personal matters outside of the office." Mr. Min says dryly from behind you.
You blink in surprise but manage to say, "I have no idea who sent this." A sheepish expression crosses your face before you regather your bearings. "Do you need anything, Mr. Min?"
Mr. Min stares back with indifference before saying, "You will be attending the afternoon meeting as well." As he turns around, he says, "Get rid of the flowers before then. The pollen will irritate my sinuses."
As he disappears into his office, your bright smile falls from your face. Glancing at the gorgeous bouquet, you take it to the breakroom and deposit it there. They were beautiful and would cheer up the bland state of your desk, but to keep them around will only aggravate Mr. Min, which would work against your favor.
You've worked for Mr. Min for nearly a year, and his treatment towards you hasn't changed. He always kept you at a distance, revealing only his professional and indifferent attitude towards you.
At first you thought he was only like this in order to encourage hard work from new employees, but even on days you went above and beyond, he's never cracked a smile in your direction. His cold exterior has always been in place that sometimes it hurt your feelings. In the beginning, you would feel so exhausted after a work day, as if his attitude drained you mentally.
Slowly, you managed to adapt to the way he did things, understanding that his demeanor often produced effective outcomes for the company. Since then, you learned how to take his stand-offish attitude as compliments. If Mr. Min had no criticism for the job you did, it often meant he was pleased. If he were to sigh, it meant that he expected you to excel at the job. However, if he simply stared at you with a raised brow, it meant you had to redo the entirety of your work again. These small gestures often dictated your own mood too. You found that on days where Mr. Min resorted to silence, it gave you some sense of peace. His silence often calms your nerves.
Mr. Min's not super responsive to cheery attitudes and prefers employees to remain focused. He works efficiently with people who take their jobs seriously. However, there was one time you swore you saw him smirk.
It was during an interaction with another employee, a pompous man who often made female employees uncomfortable with his comments. It was probably the first time you ever responded with the intent to dismiss someone.
You had employed your usual upbeat tone, but the words were definitely meant to slice. You felt a little horrible for acting in that way, but from the distance, you swore you saw Mr. Min smirk at your response. The sight was jarring that you honestly felt it didn't happen. It was the first time you saw his expressionless features twist into something that might have conveyed amused or entertained. It was both shocking and terrifying. Mr. Min's faint smirk haunted your dreams for weeks.
As the work day was coming to a close, you realized that you and Mr. Min were the last ones left in the office. It wasn't unusual since he often put in overtime throughout the week, and you often stayed late to organize his schedule and other reports.
"Sir?" You knock on his office door. His usual hum in response was all you needed to hear before entering. "I finished organizing the reports from today's meeting. I'll be taking my leave." You say to him, half expecting a hum of acknowledgement in response.
"Ms. Y/n." He says, stopping you in your tracks. "After the investor's meeting this week, schedule a work dinner for the teams who've helped."
You raise your brows in surprise. The entire year you've worked with him, he's never initiated something like this before. It was usually the higher ups who suggested it under the guise of team bonding when in actuality it was their way of having the company pay for drinks and a meal.
"Of course!" You reply merrily. "The usual restaurant?" You ask for confirmation.
Mr. Min nods in response. "It'll be a work based gathering, so no outsiders okay?"
Your brows pull together in confusion, wondering why he needed to clarify that. No one outside the company ever joined a work dinner in the past.
"Of course, sir." You reply. You notice his gaze wander to your desk. "Is there anything else?"
His lips quirk to the left, almost smirk-like that you feel a blush creep onto your face. You've never seen that expression before, at least not noticeably.
"That's all. Good work." He says dismissively.
You close his office door behind you, finally exhaling the breath you had been holding in. You didn't quite understand why you suddenly felt an explosion of butterflies bloom in your stomach, but once again, Mr. Min has stirred emotions of shock and terror within you.
