"I'm glad we could meet again." Miho says warmly, flashing a bright smile at you.
You force a small smile onto your face as you take a seat across from him. It was Saturday night and your mother had, once again, arranged a date for you and Miho. You had declined his previous attempts at asking you out, but tonight wasn't avoidable since your mom had scheduled it under the guise of meeting her. It was a shady trick, but you couldn't just leave without coming off rude. Miho didn't deserve that, at least that's what you're telling yourself.
"Yeah, sorry about my busy schedule." You say in a polite voice.
You muster up a pleasant expression as Miho launches into a detailed story about a case he's working on. You half-heartedly follow along, throwing in a few "ah's" and "hmm's" for good measure.
You're not sure at what point in his story you completely zone out, but you're startled back into the moment when he asks, "Don't you think so?"
Your eyes widen a bit as you give a noncommittal shrug, making a sound that neither sounded like you agree or disagree with what he said. Miho takes no notice to the way your eyes glaze over as he continues to speak.
When he finally finishes with his story, Miho surprisingly asks, "So what do you like to do outside of work?"
You sit up a little straighter, surprised that he's giving you the space to speak. "Well, I like being outdoors." You reply softly.
Miho's brows raise with surprise before, figuratively, taking back the mic, launching into a story about how he found an amazing hiking spot. You feel your shoulders deflate a little as you force an expression of interest onto your face. It was torture having to endure tonight, something you were sure to explain in detail to your mother when you have the chance.
You've tried telling her about your dislike towards blind dates and how they often follow the same pattern; forced pleasantries followed by strained conversations that force two people with nothing in common to grasp at anything they possibly might have in common. You felt being alone was worth your time compared to this charade. The entire date felt like you had been holding your breath underwater that when it was coming to an end, it was like breaking the surface.
"We should definitely go hiking together." Miho says optimistically.
You couldn't help but feel bad for him because he's missing on a lot of social cues. There's no way anyone could be that self-involved. You were sure that he was just an overly optimistic person who hasn't experienced rejection just yet. Hell, you were hardly someone who rejected anyone because there haven't been a lot of opportunities that warrant one. In your silence, Miho leans forward and suddenly you feel your entire body go on alert. You couldn't believe he was actually trying to kiss you. Words escape you as you try to lean away from him.
This is not what you wanted whatsoever.
A rigid kind of panic overtakes your body as you freeze up. Your mind is screaming for you to move out of the way, but somehow it gets lost in translation when trying to put it into action. You were about to stop Miho from advancing on you when you're distracted by a hand touching your shoulder. The gentle pull of the unknown person prevents you from being in front of Miho. Your head snaps in the direction of the person.
