Your life in London was going fairly well considering you hadn't known a soul upon arriving. The new company you worked for gave you a decent stipend to put down money on a place to live. You found a place that was close to perfect in West London. It was completely renovated, all amenities new and updated–a step-up compared to what you used to have back in South Korea.
The thought of South Korea brings a wave of nostalgia to wash over you. You've been maintaining steady contact with Jin, but as the months progressed, you found it hard to reach out to him everyday. What once was daily calls slowly became weekly calls before dialing down to texting, and that was if you had the time to spare. Your job was a little more demanding, making it difficult for you to keep track of the different time zones and when Jin would most likely be free to talk.
"Why don't you ever go out on dates?" Henley, a colleague of yours who's been helping you adjust to life in London, asks as she walks beside you out of the building.
You offer a shrug. "It's never crossed my mind. I sorta got out of a relationship before moving here." You reply, sparing her the minute details of it all.
Henley offers a small smile. "It's been a little over half a year since you've arrived. Wouldn't it be nice to put yourself out there and have some fun?" She asks warmly.
You know she's mean well, and if this had come from a different person, you might've found it irritating, but Henley had one of those personalities where she was genuinely kind.
"I think I can have fun without factoring dating into the equation." You counter with a small smirk.
She breathes out a laugh. "I guess, but there's no passion in it."
You nod, a strain smile coating your features. You breathe out a sigh because you do miss dating, but you don't want to experience that with anyone else other than Jin. You missed him terribly, but God knows why the relationship ended. None of it was ideal, but what's done is done.
"Hey, you wanna grab a drink before calling it a night?" You ask Henley who agrees in earnest.
"I know the perfect place and it's not too far from here." She says brightly.
The two of you head towards the parking lot before driving off towards what Henley put into the GPS. The commute was fairly quick. It would've been quicker if it weren't for the 6PM traffic, but Henley filled the silence with idle talking. It helped to distract you from lingering on thinking about Jin.
The pub was quaint. Squared away in a timeless looking brick building, dressed up with twinkling lights that resembled antique light bulbs. A warm smile stretches across your face since it reminds you of a restaurant that Jin had taken you to before moving away. The thought of him leaves a longing taste in your mouth and you immediately try not to linger on it for too long, fearing that regret and guilt will follow behind.
You and Henley opt to sit at the bar, ordering yourselves a cocktail. Henley had been kind enough towards you these past couple of months–inviting you out to a few of her friend gatherings and even taking you around the city to get you adjusted to your new home. You were grateful for her kindness, unsure what things would've been like for you if there wasn't a friendly face to confide in.
