*Three years ago*
"I don't have time for this, Tae." Mara says sharply as she grabs her purse.
Tae felt like he was losing grip of his relationship, making his heart ache as he tried and tried to reach out to his girlfriend, but was only met with indifference.
"You never have time for our relationship." Tae remarks in a mournful tone.
He doesn't know where things went awry, but lately he feels distance growing between him and Mara. At first he thought their distance was due to their long work hours. The two of them had pretty demanding schedules with large projects assigned by their respective bosses, but he thought once that was out of the way, things would go back to normal. But he has yet been able to have a decent conversation with Mara. She's always brushing it off, brushing Tae off. It was nearly irreparable at this point, but Tae wanted to make one last effort to salvage their relationship.
Mara sighs as she pauses at the entrance of their shared bedroom. She doesn't turn around when saying, "What's the point, Tae? We're heading down on different paths at this point." Her voice was soft, almost regretful, but Tae knew she meant it.
It was like a punch to his gut as she finally exited the bedroom. The silence that follows echoes in his ears as he tries to refrain from crying. He feels his heart weighted in his stomach, twisting and turning with unease. It was like he was grasping at smoke at this point, always slipping through his fingers before disappearing altogether.
A shudder runs through Tae's chest as he readies himself for work. He goes about his day in a haze, as if his body were set to autopilot. He manages fairly well to seem fine to his peers. He's been pretty good at masking his emotions when necessary, but once he's by himself, he allows his false smile to slip, shifting into a saddened numbness. He doesn't even realize when his work day has ended. He'd been sitting at his desk, staring at his computer screen for a long time. He's pretty sure he looked crazy if someone were watching him.
It was maddening to feel so helpless in a situation that he was desperately trying to fix. But Mara seemed like she was already one foot out the door. He sits there for another hour, contemplating how to right whatever wrong turn their relationship took. He even goes to the extent of considering couples counseling, something he's sure he'd have to take extra effort to convince Mara of. However, with each possible solution, Tae can't help but wonder if any of it was really worth it.
She doesn't seem all that interested in repairing their relationship. Hell, she doesn't even talk to him unless Tae corners her. It's as if they've become strangers over the past few months. They exchange lukewarm greetings in the morning and for the rest of the day it's silent. She doesn't text or call, she doesn't give him a heads up if she's staying at work late, just complete silence. It's as if he were living with a ghost at this point. He goes to be alone and if he doesn't wake up early enough, she's already out the door.
