Hoseok never really understood why Ava decided to be best friends with y/n. At least that's what he initially thought all those years ago. Y/n was indifferent, quiet, and at times rude. But the more Ava brought y/n around, the more he realized why Ava chose her to be her best friend. Despite y/n's coldness, she was kind, honest, and undeniably loyal. Hoseok admired y/n's unwavering attitude and how she never allowed Ava to feel the brunt of someone's words.

Hoseok was used to protecting his baby sister, but y/n did a pretty damn good job when he wasn't around. It's why he couldn't understand the distance that grew between them over the years.

He partially expected y/n to have been comfortable around him, but he knew she was keeping him at a safe distance. To some extent, it annoyed him. He had nothing against y/n. In fact, he admired her at times. She was a fierce person when she chose to be, which wasn't often, but the few times Hoseok got to witness that side of her, it had stunned him into silence.

He could reasonably shoulder some of the blame for the distance between y/n and himself. When he first met her, he wasn't necessarily the most welcoming, but it was only because Ava often befriended terrible people. But now, he can't seem to fathom why y/n keeps a line drawn between him and her. Whenever they hang out, y/n doesn't seem uncomfortable in his presence, nor does she express dislike towards him. It's why he finds it peculiar why they're not close.

After running into y/n at the library, Hoseok felt that he might have crossed a line he didn't realize he was so willing to cross. The entire interaction was unlike him, though he wasn't necessarily surprised it happened. He recalls somewhere during high school, y/n had changed, and it wasn't because she slowly became outspoken due to Ava's influence.

He always revered y/n as a younger sister, much like he viewed Ava. But there was a shift, something that made him view her beyond that label he so carefully placed upon her. The once quiet and demure y/n had grown into someone confident. Her once awkward features had slowly shaped into attractiveness that it completely caught Hoseok off guard. It was like a punch to his gut that robbed him of breathing.

He couldn't make sense of it all which triggered his fight or flight instincts. Since he couldn't run away from his feelings, he chose to fight them. He refused to entertain the idea of thinking about y/n in that way.

During a family trip to the coast, Ava had invited y/n along. It wasn't unusual since their parents adored y/n like she was an extension of their family. Hoseok remained indifferent as he slowly sorted out his confused feelings about her, wondering how in the hell it happened.

"Everything okay?" Ava had asked, eyeing her brother suspiciously. Ava and Hoseok had been helping prep dinner together while y/n was on the phone with her parents.

Hoseok had been quiet for most of the car ride, claiming he was tired from the amount of hours he clocked in at practice. It wasn't entirely a lie, but the truth was far more embarrassing to admit.

"Earth to Hobi!" Ava teases. "What's gotten into you?"

Hoseok felt a lump form in his throat as he thought of an answer. Finally, he manages to say, "It's nothing. Just brain fog."

Ava cocks a brow at him before saying, "Girl troubles? I heard there was a girl who confessed to you at school. I think everyone knows." She teases.

Hoseok lets out a sigh. He had forgotten about that. He wasn't the type to garner a lot of attention from girls, so this would've been a monumental moment. However, it was eclipsed by the alarming confusion he felt towards y/n.

"Oh, right. That." Hoseok replies. "It's nothing. I kinda forgot about it."

Ava stares at her brother with furrowed brows. "You've been like this for a couple weeks now. Are you sure there's nothing bothering you?"

Hoseok hates lying to Ava, but he wasn't about to tell his baby sister that he possibly likes her best friend. He's sure she'd slap the shit out of him.

Instead, he forces a bright smile on his face and says, "Yeah, everything's cool. How about we all take a walk to the pier after dinner?"

The suggestion was as close to normalcy as he could offer at the moment which seemed to please Ava since her face lit up with excitement.

"That sounds awesome! I'll let y/n know." She says and bounds out of the kitchen.

Once out of sight, Hoseok's smile slips from his face. He didn't want to feel the way he felt nor did he want to analyze it. From then on, Hoseok wore a carefully crafted mask in front of y/n. One that was nice enough for friendship, but never revealing the potential of wanting more.

As the years went by, he grew comfortable around y/n, safely tucking away any possible notions of attraction towards her. But for some damn reason, they resurfaced with a vengeance at the library.

"You look like utter shit." Hoseok's roommate and, unfortunately, best friend comments as he enters their dorm room. It had been nearing noon since the whole library incident with y/n.

"You've no idea." Hoseok mutters dryly as he throws himself on the tiny, twin bed, earning a chuckle from Hyungwon who was seated at his desk.

"I take it this morning's workout kicked your ass?" Hyungwon presses before adding, "Or did you just have a run-in with the love of your life?"

Hoseok rolls his eyes into the pillow his face was buried in.

Hyungwon was the only one who knew about Hoseok's (denied) interest in y/n and it wasn't because he willingly shared it with him. His best friend had gotten him drunk to the point that Hoseok was spilling his guts in more ways than one.

"She's not the love of my life." Hoseok replies while sitting up.

Hoseok refuses to cross that line. The mere thought sends shivers down his spine.

"You practically turn into a bumbling idiot when she's around." Hyungwon points out.

Hoseok scowls at him. "I do not. I'm the perfect image of being put together." He retorts.

Hyungwon scoffs before saying, "So what happened?"

Hoseok groans, running his hand over his face. "It was nothing, but it definitely seemed like something."

Hyungwon cocks a brow at his friend. "That's not vague at all."

Hoseok doesn't even know how to word what happened because technically nothing happened. It was just a brief moment where his eyes lingered on y/n's face longer than normal. It's not as if he had confessed anything to y/n. But there was a hint of recognition in y/n's eyes that made the library feel suffocatingly small and his heart thunder like crazy. Maybe Hoseok was going crazy and overanalyzing things.

"Maybe I should just tell her." Hoseok says as he stares at nothing in particular. It's a dumb suggestion on his part, but he can't seem to silence these incessant thoughts.

"You think Ava would be okay with it?" Hyungwon counters.

Hoseok gives it some thought. A vivid image of Ava punching him pops into his mind, causing him to wince.

"Probably not, but at least if everything is out in the open it'll give me some kind of relief." Hoseok replies, shrugging his shoulders.

"I doubt that, but it's not an entirely dumb idea." Hyungwon tells him.

"Yeah, I'll just tell y/n everything and maybe these feelings will disappear once she rejects me." Hoseok says more confidently. It was mostly directed towards himself rather than Hyungwon, but his friend's hum of approval was all he needed to form a half-cocked plan to confess to y/n.
