Namjoon felt nervous as hell after getting a text from y/n. He felt like an idiot for the confession that fumbled out of his mouth yesterday. He hadn't planned it either, which was his first mistake.
He was just tired of seeing someone he cared about get hurt over and over again. He couldn't recall when he began to have feelings for y/n either.
One day she was his best friend and the next he couldn't not look at her without wanting something more. It had terrified him at first when he realized this too. He tried fighting off his feelings, thinking it was better to ignore it until they went away. The last thing Namjoon wanted was to make things awkward and somehow he dropped the ball on that.
Namjoon's not usually the impulsive type either, but yesterday he couldn't contain the words he'd been wanting to say for months. The look on y/n's face stirred concern within him. He knew he should've just stayed quiet, but it's too late now.
He spent the previous night overthinking everything, combing through every expression that crossed her face yesterday to even the very first day they met. He meticulously analyzed everything as if there were answers locked away in his memories, but sadly, he came upon nothing other than the empty feeling of possibly ruining a friendship he valued dearly. He was certain that he made a mistake by telling y/n his biggest secret.
The next morning, he drags his feet getting ready. He wasn't sure how the day was gonna go. He wanted things to go back to the way it was.
He meets y/n at their usual coffee spot. She was nervously picking at her nails while her eyes gazed down in her lap. Namjoon felt guilt weighing heavy on his shoulders. He wonders if he should tell her to forget about the entire ordeal, to just treat him as she usually does, but he knew, whether intended or not, the damage was done. You can't unwrinkle paper back to its original form.
Y/n glances up to find Namjoon taking a seat across from her. His nerves seemed to ignite the moment their eyes locked, earning a nervous chuckle to escape his lips.
It's now or never. Namjoon thinks as he braces himself for the verbal beatdown he thinks he rightfully deserves.
Instead, he's met with a warm greeting from y/n. He wonders if she had decided to ignore his confession completely.
"I gave a lot of thought to what you said yesterday..."She begins, her sentence trailing off, leaving Namjoon balancing on the edge of anticipation. "And I think I owe it to myself to give us a try."
Namjoon had been bracing for rejection but was surprised with acceptance. "What?" He balks. He was utterly shocked and his features definitely expressed that.
Y/n giggles. "Don't look so surprised. I mean, I value our friendship and don't want to do anything to jeopardize it, but if I were to believe in soulmates, I'm pretty sure it'd be you."
Namjoon is sent reeling with a flurry of thoughts.
She's accepting my confession?
She likes me back?
Soulmates?
Are we really soulmates?
How do I not mess this up?
You're in way over your head!
Y/n could see him struggling to grasp what had been said and immediately reached for his hands, which looked to be in a shaking frenzy. "Namjoon," She says gently, grounding him in the moment. "Think of this more as a way to figure out all of this." She supplies.
Namjoon nods, his brain seems to be glitching and can't produce an actual sentence.
Y/n continues speaking, "I like you and I think I could love you...more than a friend. I just want to take things slow first."
"Right, I can do slow." Namjoon manages to articulate, earning a giggle from her. His mind is floating somewhere in deep space that he hardly hears what Y/n says. "I'm sorry, what?"
Y/n bites back a smile. "I said, she would go out on an official date this weekend?"
The question lingers and Namjoon feels like an idiot for not responding with an eager yes. Instead, he simply nods.
"We don't have to. I was simply suggesting we try." Y/n explains.
Namjoon's features must've looked panicked since her eyes grow big. "No, it's not...I'm excited. My brain is just not working." Namjoon quickly explains.
Y/n lets out a nervous laugh, her features relaxing a bit. "Okay, perfect. What should we do?"
Namjoon breathes out slowly, as if giving himself time to think.
"Well, there's a new art exhibit opening this weekend. We can go to that." He offers.
Y/n nods in approval. "I'd like that. I'd like it better if you didn't look so nervous though." She says teasingly.
Namjoon exhales a nervous breath. "Right, sorry. I'm still wrapping my head around this. I'm excited." He clarifies.
The awkwardness finally lifts from the air as Y/n dives into a story about the recent book she's reading. Her voice helps to calm Namjoon's thundering heartbeat. He truly is excited about their upcoming date.
The weekend comes in a hurry and Namjoon feels utterly unprepared. It's not that he's never taken anyone out on a date, but with y/n it's different. He wants to make sure that it goes smoothly. He fears no matter what he does, it'll be awkward or come off as trying too hard. He takes a few deep breaths before heading out the door.
Namjoon was grateful that y/n filled the silence with idle talking. His brain was still wracked with wavering nerves to articulate full sentences, so he spent the first portion of conversation nodding his head and offering single word replies. After another 10 minutes of these antics, Y/n grasps Namjoon by his shoulders, halting him from walking.
"Namjoon," She says sternly. "Relax, okay. You being nervous only makes me nervous and I don't want us to be awkward around one another."
Namjoon lets out a breathy chuckle. "You're right. I'm just dropping the ball today, huh?"
Y/n giggles. "You're not. I think we just need to not be so hard on ourselves. It's a date, Namjoon. Lighten up."
He nods his head in agreement. "Yeah, I'll do that."
It was easier said than done, but as y/n continued to remain calmly by his side, he felt himself easing into the date. The day carries on smoothly, filled with easy flowing conversations about the art pieces displayed on the walls.
Y/n was pretty knowledgeable about contemporary art, something that Namjoon appreciated. He liked that he could share his interests with y/n so easily without any fear of judgment. After thoroughly walking through the museum, Namjoon felt lighter. He felt his hands linger close to y/n, debating whether or not he was going to hold her hand.
He can't seem to calm his jittering nerves, stealing glances at y/n in the process. He's usually more confident when it comes to dating because he's never experienced anything like this before. He was so busy being caught up in his thoughts that he hadn't realized y/n made the decision for him. Her small hand fit into his, no hesitancy behind her decision. Glancing at y/n, Namjoon notices the broad smile on her face, easing the tension that had been building up within him.
