"You've gotta be kidding me," Dean muttered under his breath as he pressed the buttons of an old jukebox machine.
It'd taken his money but wouldn't play a song, no matter how much he pounded it with his fist.
Dean hated it when diners used juke machines as mere decor. Even worse was when they didn't bother to tell customers that the damn things didn't work. He'd already lost more quarters than he cared to admit, all in the vain hope of getting a decent song to play while he ate his burger. But the silence of the juke was only adding to the frustration.
He let out an exasperated sigh, sliding out of the booth and leaving the useless machine behind. His stomach growled as he made his way back to the table where his burger and fries were still waiting, cooling off under the dim lights of the greasy diner.
Sam was already sitting there, typing away on his laptop, finishing up a call. Dean plopped back down and grabbed his burger, quickly taking a bite. He hadn't even realized how hungry he was until now.
"Okay, Bobby, thanks," Sam muttered into the phone before hanging up, not missing a beat as he started typing again.
"What's up?" Dean asked, his mouth still full.
"Bobby found something in Wyoming," Sam said, his eyes never leaving the screen of his laptop. "Could be a job."
Dean grunted, swallowing before grabbing another bite of his sandwich. He mindlessly split his burger in half, then paused. He hadn't even thought about it until now, but the other half of the burger wasn't going to be eaten by Nadia.
She'd gone back to Nebraska to watch Ben while their parents were off on some couples' getaway. And damn, he missed her. He always missed her when she wasn't around, but now, with the weird tension between him and Sam—this fake truce they were walking around with—he missed her even more. He would've given anything for her to be there right now, sitting across from him, sharing a plate of fries, and making things feel normal again.
With a sigh, Dean set the other half of his burger aside and took a bite of the one still in his hand, chewing slowly as he leaned back in the booth.
"Small town, no one's died in the past week and a half," Sam continued, eyes scanning the laptop screen, seemingly lost in thought.
