CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
"Me and The Devil"

STORYBROOKE
PRESENT DAY

With her great-granddaughter on the warpath against her, Athena had to frequently change where she was hiding. She wasn't about to be beat by someone who, in her eyes, was less than her. Someone who was unworthy of her place on earth, someone like her great-granddaughter. Athena needed Lily's power in order to be unstoppable, and in order to get that power, she would have to kill Lily herself; but that was proving to be harder than she initially thought.

"You're not that great at hiding, you know?"

Athena spun around to find Ophelia standing just a few feet behind her. "If I can find you this easily, it'll only be a matter of time before Lilith does; and I highly doubt she's going to let you leave here alive." Ophelia added.

"Lilith isn't going to be the one who wins this battle, dear." Athena said. She sounded so confident but all Ophelia could do was laugh in her mother's face.

"Oh, Mother, you have no idea on what she truly is. There's no stopping somebody like her. She'd rip you to shreds without ever thinking about it." Ophelia said.

"She doesn't strike me as the type to hurt family." Athena said.

"Did that strike you before or after you murdered her son and made her watch?" Ophelia asked.

Athena didn't answer. She just stood there looking at her daughter. She had always assumed Ophelia would side with her, just as she always had. They were mother and daughter after all. But here Ophelia stood, apparently siding with her granddaughter that she had only known for a little over a year.

Evil isn't born, it's made. A saying that Ophelia always used to believe until she got to know her mother, and discovered what she was really like. That's when their relationship began to fall apart.

ENCHANTED FOREST
PAST

Ophelia - now eight years old - giggled as she ran around the flower garden chasing a butterfly, all under the watchful eye of her grandmother, Valerie. She barely saw her mother's parents, and spent most of her time with her father and his family.

As the years went by, Athena appeared less and less interested in being a mother. Especially a mother to a child who carried weak magic that was controlled by the moon. Even when Adam denied it and tried to pretend as if everything was okay, Valerie knew he was lying. She could read minds and see the auras that surrounded everyone. Adam's was either blue in sadness or red in anger. The only other colour she ever saw it in was orange, and that was when he had Ophelia close by.

Valerie sighed heavily as she watched her young granddaughter. She had already had a vision about Ophelia's future, and she didn't like what she saw.

"Something on your mind, my love?" Charles asked as he stood next to his wife.

"No." Valerie answered quietly.

Charles looked at his wife concerned. She had never been honest with him when she had a vision. She always said no when he asked about them; and he always knew she was lying. Valerie always had a guilty look on her face when she lied, even when she tried to pretend that she wasn't.

"What was it about this time?" Charles asked.

Valerie sighed. "Just...stuff. It's nothing we'll have control over."

Charles frowned slightly as he followed his wife's gaze to their granddaughter. "It was about her, wasn't it?" He asked, and Valerie silently nodded her head in confirmation.

"What?" Charles questioned.

"It's her mother. She's evil." Valerie answered.

"Be careful, Valerie. That's our daughter-in-law you're talking about." Charles said.

"I'm aware of that, Charles. But I can't say she's going to be the fairest of them all, when I've seen otherwise. You just don't understand and you never will." Valerie sighed.

She walked away from Charles and plastered on a fake smile as she approached Ophelia. She offered to take her on a trail ride to get her away from Palace life, something the eight year old was more than happy to do.

Charles stood there and watched them walk away with a careful eye. Valerie had never been a huge fan of royal life, and there were times she had threatened to leave Charles and take Adam away from it.

Ever since the wedding between Adam and Athena took place, Valerie had become more agitated and stressed out about her visions; and Charles was beginning to worry she'd flee with Ophelia. But he would never let that happen. He'd rather see his wife dead than risk anything happening to the crown.

STORYBROOKE
PRESENT DAY

"I just think we should keep our distance from all of this. It's none of our business." Mary Margaret said, holding baby Neal in her arms.

Emma scoffed and shook her head. "Stay out of this? My best friend is dead. There is no way I'm staying out of this."

Her parents had been doing and saying anything they could think of to avoid helping the Jones family out with their situation. "We know you're hurting, Emma, but we have a baby to protect." David said.

"Right because he's the baby, he's all that matters." Emma said.

"It's not like that, Emma." David said.

"Sure seems like it." Emma said before she grabbed her red leather jacket. Dacid tried to stop her from leaving, but she just brushed him off and left the apartment.

Emma frantically knocked on the front door of the Mills family home, until Henry opened. "Mom? What are you doing here?" He asked.

"Looking for Lilith. Is she home?" Emma questioned.

Henry shook his head. "No, she's never here much. Mom isn't either. I think they're plotting something."

"Like what?" Emma questioned.

"I don't know. I've tried asking but they wouldn't tell me." Henry said in disappointment. "Why do you need to see Lily anyway?"

"She's come to let me know she's on my side." Lily said as she appeared at Emma's side. She sent Henry back inside before turning to face Emma. "I thought you'd be cooped up and hiding away with your parents. It's the only thing you heroes are good for lately."

"I'm not my parents, just like you aren't yours. Your son was my best friend and the bitch that killed him is still breathing. I want to put an end to that." Emma said.

"Well, well, well. Look at the saviour going dark. The Dark Swan." Lily chuckled. "Oh, if only you could see what I can. You have no idea how true that little nickname will be one day."

"I know I don't have magic anymore, but I can help." Emma said.

"Sweetheart, the only thing you're good for right now is making a smile appear on my idiot brother's face. I have no interest in those that will just slow me down." Lily scoffed.

"I'm not a nobody. I'm somebody who knows how to find people that don't want to be found." Emma said.

"If Athena was a petty, magicless thief, I'd say jump on board; but she's not." Lily said. "If you really want to help, almighty saviour, you'll stay out of this."

"No." Emma said, folding her arms. "Whether you like it or not, you and I now share a son, so that makes us family and I help my family. I don't care if you let me or don't let me...I'm not going anywhere."

Lily smirked slightly. "Alright, saviour. You can help us out." She dropped the smirk. "But if you die, it's not my problem."
