CHAPTER FIFTY
"Something awful happened here"

( note: everything in italics is Lorelai's premonition )

"Not quite the burial she was expecting." Gold commented as he took a step back. With the help of David and the crocodile, Ophelia had taken her mother's body to the furthest point of the town boundaries in the woods, dug a hole and threw her body in.

"She's lucky we've buried her instead of leaving her out as fodder for the animals." Ophelia said coldly. She was still trying to work out how she felt about it all. Sure, she was glad her mother was dead but at the same time, a part of her was grieving. But she couldn't tell who she grieved for - the loss of her mother or the loss of the granddaughter she barely knew.

Yes, Lily was alive but she wasn't the same person she was before her son died; and she would never be that person again. That version of Lily died when Evander's heart was turned to dust in Athena's hand. She was never coming back and the version of Lily that existed now, was the one that was going to be there to stay.

Once they had finished burying Athena's body, the trio made their way back into town. Gold drove off in his own car, leaving Ophelia no other choice but to get a ride back into town with David. "I'm sorry." He said, as he pulled up on the side of the road, just outside of the bed and breakfast.

"For what exactly?" Ophelia asked.

"The loss of your mother." David replied.

Ophelia laughed and shook her head. "That is not a loss and I know you are not sorry that she is gone. Just as you aren't sorry for not contributing to protecting this town when she was alive. There was a threat walking around your town, and you did nothing but hide away."

"We have a-"

"If you say something about that baby one more time, I am going to hit you in the face." Ophelia said, leaving David shocked. She continued; "You fought against the Evil Queen back in the Enchanted Forest, back she was truly evil. You imprisoned Rumpelstiltskin. You had every opportunity to help my granddaughter and you did nothing but hide. Your son will hear about this one day and wonder why his parents, who are supposed to be great leaders and fighters, chose the cowards way out."

David was left speechless as Ophelia left him alone. He knew she was right but at the time, he was doing what he thought was right. He wanted to keep his wife and new-born son safe. He wanted to protest and say more to Ophelia, but all he could do as she left was sigh heavily.

Sitting on the forest's twig, mud and leaf covered ground, Lily stared at the spot where she last saw her son alive. She hadn't been back there since they took his body away, as she thought it would've been too hard to face it again. She had been sitting there for the best part of an hour already, and couldn't take her eyes away from the spot.
