"Do you have everything you need, Khai?" My mom questions as she stands by the doorway of our new house, intent on seeing me off on my first day of school in this town.
"Mom, I'm fine. I'm not a little kid anymore." I gently remind her, sending a slight smile along with my words. She returns the smile, then adds,
"I hope you settle in nicely. This is the town you were born in. It's nice to be back again."
"Yeah. Well, I don't remember ever living here before now."
"Right. You were just a year and a half before we left. I suppose it makes sense that you have no recollection of that time period."
I dip my head in a nod.
"I'd love to stay here and chat about things we've already discussed multiple times, but I don't wanna be late on my first day." I bring up, uneasy from the stress of having to be the new kid.
"Okay, I won't hold you back any longer. Enjoy your day."
"I'll try."
I'm grateful that we've chosen a house near where I'll be attending school. I don't have to worry about bus schedules and routes, and it won't take me long to walk to and from school each day.
And if there was ever a school shooting, I could just run home. An odd thought, but it's good to be prepared. Not that I could outrun a bullet, though.
This morning, the town is enshrouded in a mild fog. The clouds appear dark and heavy, like it may rain sometime later this afternoon.
Or now.
A large raindrop splatters against my skin, and I look up at the sky. Right at that moment, a cacophony of abrupt car horn sounds reach my ears, and I realize I'm in the middle of the road. I run across it awkwardly and jump onto the sidewalk, forcing an apologetic smile at the likely sardonic driver.
From what I've observed so far, the town is relatively quiet, which is why the incident had caught me off guard a little. Still, I should've kept an eye on my surroundings. I guess I could've expected something like that to happen with the way I just blindly walked across the road. I tend to get caught up in my head sometimes.
As I continue on my way, the sidewalk becomes littered with darker specks. The rain is becoming heavier, and I can only assume that the earth will be drenched within a short matter of time. At least I'm wearing a rain coat. Still, I hope I'll be able to make it indoors before the worst of it hits.
A low rumble reverberates overhead, followed by a bright flash that accentuates everything around me for a brief second. Just moments later, a torrential downpour descends on me and pelts the ground.
Great.
So much for that.
I break into a run, attempting to shield my face as I move along the sidewalk. My attempts to reduce the soaking will likely be futile anyway, but I may as well be a little early on my first day. That way, I'll have more time to figure out what I'm doing. I did have an appointment with the principle when I was first enrolled, and he discussed everything with me, but I didn't retain much of that information. Extra time will give me an opportunity to figure everything out by myself.
My mom keeping me up didn't help much either.
After barely a minute, I slow to a jog as I begin I feel short of breath. I'm not the most athletic person so it makes sense that I can't run for long. However, something feels off. Something else then my athleticism. I don't recognize my surroundings. This also makes sense as I'm new to this town, but I have this inkling that I'm not where I'm supposed to be.
