Influence

When I wake up the next morning, my throat is still incredibly sore and I feel stiff again.

I'm not sure where my uncle and dad went, but I'm glad they left. Who knows what my uncle might've attempted throughout the night if they hadn't.

I slowly sit up, then stare blankly at my wall for a couple minutes before I finally decide to get up. I change out of my PJ's and find an outfit for school, in no mood to shower this morning.

I still head to the bathroom, and when I glance in the mirror, I notice bruising around my neck.

I sigh as I try to figure out what I should do about it. I don't want anyone to see, especially not Khai.

After I brush my teeth, I decide to put on a high-collared jacket. That'll do for now.

When I head downstairs, I find the house empty, so I just leave on my skateboard. It's not like there's food around anyways.

I skate over to Khai's house and when I get there, he's happy to greet me.

"Good morning, Ty! Did you find your meds?" He asks.

With everything going on, I'd totally forgotten about them. I'm surprised Khai hasn't, seeing he even forgets his age occasionally.

"No..."

"Oh... that must suck. Well, I brought you a muffin. I figured you wouldn't have breakfast."

I feel emotional about how much he thinks about me. About how much he cares about me.

"Thank you." I say, almost choking on my voice. It reminds me of the incident last night, and I swallow quickly.

"Hey... Khai?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry about strangling you against the wall the other day." I tell him. "I was only messing around, I didn't mean..." I stop when I feel lost for words.

"It's okay, Ty."

I shrug.

"So, how are you coping?" Khai asks.

"From what?"

"Your medication withdrawal."

"It's a little rough. But... hopefully I find them soon enough."

"I hope they didn't fall out your bag or something." Khai says worriedly. He looks at me. "And eat your muffin." He says, gently guiding it towards my face.

"Okay, okay." I take a bite, relieved to be eating something. I haven't had anything since lunch yesterday.

"I hope you like bananas. That's what flavour it is. I mean, you could probably tell... anyways, they're leftovers from the picnic Scarlette and I had. But don't worry, I kept them fresh."

"It's more than fine, Khai. Thanks." I say before hungrily devouring the rest of the baked good despite the pain that occurs whenever I swallow.

"It was actually really fun, you know? We bonded over our shared knowledge of the moon and had some deep conversations. I think I feel more comfortable around her now. Oh, and then I put a flower in her hair and I also put a flower in my hair but I don't know where it went... it disappeared somewhere along the lines."

"Well, I'm glad you had fun with her, Khai." I say in the most genuine voice I can manage.

The truth is, I'm a little jealous. It's partially because of them bonding, or maybe just the apprehension that someone else is going to scoop Khai up before I'm ready to.

But even though I know Khai is gay, I can't help but feel uneasy whenever him and the red-head get closer.

Because what if he just feels like she's the right person, even though she's not a guy?
