Safety First

Saturday morning: the first day of freedom following an exhausting week of school. The perfect day to relax and wind down.

I wish.

Apparently, Tyrone and I have different definitions.

"Remind me why I'm in a gym trying to learn somersaults?" I ask groggily.

"Safety rolls." Tyrone corrects. "And because something's wrong in your balance department. Learn this roll, and you'll still fall but you won't hurt yourself. Plus, it'll be graceful."

"Tyrone I-I don't do graceful." I remind him.

Tyrone just chuckles.

"Don't doubt yourself Khai. You'd be surprised what you can do. Remember that crazy flip you did that one morning when you saw me sitting beside your bed?" He asks.

"Yeah... but I wasn't trying to do that."

"So don't try so hard. Have fun with it. Learn how your body moves a little. And stop focusing on being graceful."

"Ok." I say dubiously. "Tyrone are you gonna make me do all that cool running and jumping from rooftop to rooftop too?"

"Parkour? Only if you want to. I'm not gonna 'make' you do anything."

"Yet here I am, on a Saturday, when I'd rather be sleeping in-"

"Okay, I'm sorry. But for the record, you did tell me you wanted to learn to do a safety roll. And newsflash, I also care about you. You learn this and you at least have a lower chance of injuring yourself when you fall."

"I suppose." I say, trying to hide how happy I am that he cares about me. Especially that deeply.

"And if you did want to learn parkour, safety first. I wouldn't let you try until you've mastered that safety roll."

"How long will that take?" I ask.

"It's different for everyone. But probably not longer then six months."

"Six whole months?" I ask in despair.

"It can take that long. Might not be for you. And... even if it is, don't be deterred by something because of the time it'll take. That time will pass anyways."

"Fair enough." I reply. "You know me and patience; we don't really get along."

Tyrone looks at me and smiles, putting on a pair of finger-less gloves.

"It'll be worth it. And it'll help in the dance comp, too. You can make an accidental fall look like it was part of the routine."

"If I can even learn it before then, that is. I've failed every attempt so far and I'm getting dizzy." I complain.

"Khai, be easy on yourself. It's the first day you're ever trying this. And don't give up, you're no more than fifteen minutes in."

"I suppose."

"Go get some water or something." Tyrone suggests. "Try to do a couple safety rolls every day. It'll start to feel more natural each day and eventually you'll get it."

I nod while hydrating, glad I have Tyrone to help me.

About an hour later, I sit on a bench, watching a couple of the other people who are here while they workout. Tyrone wanders around nearby the barbells, and my gaze flicks to him.

"Whatcha up to?" I ask.

"Haven't done much weightlifting recently." He tells me before attempting to dead-lift the loaded barbell in front of him.
