***Scarlette's POV***
Khai turns to me, momentarily pausing from chewing. He's waiting expectantly, so I take a deep breath.
"I guess it's not something I need to tell you, but more something I want to tell you." I start.
"Go ahead, I'm listening." He tells me, curiosity lacing his voice.
"Well..." I hesitate. My heart is pounding in my chest, and I'm not sure I'm ready for this. Aimee will be disappointed in me if I don't tell him yet, but how am I supposed to? How do I casually ease that into the conversation?
At least I have something else in mind that I want to talk about with someone.
"My parents have been arguing a lot lately."
Khai gasps, his face sympathetic.
"Oh no... that's so sad."
"Do you think it's serious? Like that bad? Do you think they'll get a divorce?" I ask, suddenly worried because of his reaction.
"Oh... uhm, no... maybe? I don't know what things are like between them. Or what's normal for them."
I sigh.
"Remember how I said my mom was always traveling and I hardly ever see her? Now when she's back, it's not even pleasant anymore because my dad and her just fight all the time. Conflicted feelings, I guess. My dad feels like he's raising me all by himself and that my mom just keeps abandoning us and her responsibilities to be on vacation all by herself. He doesn't think you can be a tourist and a parent. Not if you go by yourself." I explain.
"And how do you feel about that?" Khai asks me, crossing his legs and leaning a littler closer.
He's so sympathetic and he cares so much. I couldn't be any happier to have him as my mate.
Hopefully he will be too... once he finds out. That time just... isn't going to be now.
I take a deep breath, then gaze into Khai's green eyes, which are looking back into mine searchingly.
"I mean... I kind of agree with my dad. I really don't see much of my mom and I feel like she did little in raising me. But it's not like she doesn't think about me. I mean, she brings me back cool souvenirs. She's just... a free spirit. I don't know if it's right to tie her down. So I'm in the middle."
"But she's your mom, Scarlette. If she wanted to travel by herself, she shouldn't have chosen to have kids. It's a responsibility , it's something you need to make sacrifices for."
"I guess." I glance down, trying to figure out where I stand.
It's quiet for a few seconds, and at first, Khai just studies me. But then, I catch some motion, and when I glance at Khai again, he appears to be rummaging through the grass.
I watch him curiously and eventually, he turns to me and smiles at me sweetly, a little clover in his hand.
He leans forward again to fix it in my hair, perhaps as an attempt to cheer me up.
"There." He says, and I smile.
"Thanks."
Khai nods before finding another. He places it in his own hair, then giggles cutely.
I laugh. It's so much fun to hang out with him. And better yet, he's really good at cheering people up.
