"Hazel, I can't ask you to do that." Ricca says humbly.

"I'm offering. Besides, this is what friends do. I am willing and able to. I have a really good job in addition to a family inheritance."

I can't help but really badly want to meet some of my family when my mom says this.

I often try not to think about it too much because it bothers me and my mom never properly answers any of my questions. But despite all the suppressing I try, the curiousity and longing to know them always remains.

"I know being a single mom is hard. I have Rassler again now but before that, it was always just Khai and I. Financially I was okay because of my circumstances, but it was still hard. I can't imagine how it must've been and still will be if you're also struggling financially." My mom continues.

Tyrone walks over to me while our moms continue to talk.

While he looks somewhat relieved, he stops beside me to say quietly,

"I was under the impression Hazel was disowned and that's why you know nothing about them."

"She never mentioned it to me... but to be fair I know nothing about them anyways."

"Yeah... it's just not really making sense to me... because if she was cut off from the family, she wouldn't have an inheritance. Like I feel like if they were mad enough to kick her out, they'd leave her with nothing."

"Oh... good point. Though maybe she got the inheritance before she was disowned. If a relative died while she was still with them then they'd probably leave her with money that's legally hers and no one can take it." I pause. "Oh, maybe she wasn't kicked out and instead ran away from home so they gave her money hoping she'd come back." I whisper.

"Possibly. Or who knows, maybe the inheritance is why she got disowned. Maybe she had a really rich relative who left their fortunes only to her, so her family got jealous and disowned her so she left and chose not to tell you about them to protect you from their toxicity."

"That... actually makes a lot of sense... it would certainly help me stop wondering, though it would also make me sad because I did kinda want to meet them someday..."

"Hey, it's okay, Khai. It's just a theory, right?"

I nod, then glance at my mom again, who is still talking to Ty's mom.

"You don't have to do everything alone in life, Ricca. It's okay to fall and need someone else to help pick you back up again." She says.

"What are you gonna use your money for now?" I ask Tyrone.

"I don't know. I should probably save it for another day I'll need it."

Tyrone replies.

Now that we're not talking quietly like before, my mom overhears him.

"Tyrone, for once in your life you need to do something nice for yourself. Yes, it's smart to save money, but it's also important to enjoy a little after all your hard work. Go do something you've been wanting to do for a while." She says with a smile.

"The weekend went by too fast." I say quietly to Tyrone as we wait in the math classroom. "I know it was kinda uneventful... but sometimes it's nice."

Tyrone nods, and when I look up I notice Miss. Porter subtly eyeing me with a disapproving look. Tyrone seems to notice it, too.

"God forbid a student doesn't want to be here." He says.
