MILA

The yellow eyes are back again. This time, he lunges for my throat again. I wake up, sweating in a panic, but this time I don't scream.

I realize I'm not in my apartment. It's a familiar room.

I glanced around, noticing the picture frame of Emily and me on the dresser on the other side of the room. I realize I am in her old bedroom, her parent's house. In an instant, I remember what happened last night.

I can feel Sapphire in my head, but I instantly put a block on her, knowing that last night she blocked me and left me in total darkness again.

My emotions are everywhere. I can sense movement outside the room. I know it is Sybil.

I sit up in the bed, waiting for her to leave. Once she has gone, I quietly get up and change into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt that is left out on the nearby chair. I know I must look like a mess, but I need answers from everyone or someone. They are all hiding something from me, and I want to know what it is.

I listen to see where everyone is, as I don't want confrontation with them. I am starting not to trust anyone, even those I love and who took me in as a child. I listen downstairs. I can sense Emily and George in the lounge, whispering while Sybil cooks food in the kitchen. I look around, and my eyes land on the window.

I remember as a child, Emily and I used to sneak out if we ever wanted to check out the forest. Suddenly, I remembered that George put a protective barrier up, which meant I couldn't leave. I sigh, knowing I am going to have to face them.

I head to the bedroom door. I know this is going to be bad. I don't know what they used on me, but the aftertaste in my mouth is like a wet dog breath smell. Yuck.

After freshening up in the bathroom, I take to the stairs and head into the open-planned cabin. All three of them turn to look at me.

"I need to get home. I need to get to work," I say as I head to the door.

"You can't leave just yet, Mila. We need to talk," George says, standing up. "We need to talk about what happened last night with you and the wolves."

I stop in my tracks. I lift the block I put on Sapphire, and I can feel the anxiety running from her. It is so strong that it makes me feel queasy.

"Mila, please talk to me," Sapphire says in a frightened tone.

"We will talk when we are alone, and no one is around," I hissed at her.

She can feel how mad I am at her.

"Okay, I will tell you everything," she says sadly.

"I want the truth, Sapphire. You have been keeping things from me, and I need to know why. I know everyone here won't tell me. I am starting to feel alone. You are my wolf. We are supposed to be as one, not go our separate ways," I say back, knowing I had to figure out her emotions, and I know I hurt her with what I said. Sapphire whimpers but says. "You are right, Mila. I will tell you everything. I mean EVERYTHING."

After talking to Sapphire, I looked up to see all three faces that took me in, staring right back at me.

"Sapphire and I told you everything last night. I am assuming, as I can't remember much more than Sapphire blocked me out," I say with a hint of venom. I want to get out of here.

George looks at me, and his face changes quickly, softening even. "That's okay, Mila, I made you some potion, which will help with the confusion of last night. You need to take it this morning before you work. Emily will drop you off before she goes back to her house, but she will watch you drink it. Is that understood?"

I stare back at him and nod. I know never to get on George's bad side as he has a bad temper and what he can do with his magic. He can do some serious damage.

Emily walks towards me, but I just turn to head towards the door.

But before I open the door, "Oh, just so you know, the wolves from the pack are coming into the town today as they want to make the town safer," he says. I can feel him looking at me.

I open the front door and walk to Emily's car. I climb in once she unlocks it.

When we leave her parent's house, we are in complete silence. I know we need to talk, but I am confused and hurt.

Suddenly, she pulled over to a lay-by in the forest where some cars park up when people want to go along on the trail walks. She stops and turns to look at me. I look back and see tears flow down her cheeks.

I know she hates lying to me. She always tries to tell me stuff, especially when George is hiding something from me. But sometimes, I think she is in the dark, too.

"Don't drink that potion, Mila," she finally says, sniffling while searching my eyes for my reaction.

I look straight ahead. "I remember everything that happened last night. Sapphire blocked me after I spilled my guts out." I sigh, "He gave me something again to knock me outright." I turned to look at her, and I immediately knew from the fear and hurt on her face that I was right about what George did.

"What did he give me?" I ask with a bit more harshness.

Emily looks down at her hands. She plays with a piece of string that is hanging from her jumper. "He gave you a sleeping potion to knock you out, as both you and Sapphire were uncontrollable. Once you were out cold, he put you in my room. When he came downstairs, he told us we needed to make some memory wipe potion that would wipe our memory. Mum went straight to work, even though I could tell she didn't want to do anything. He made me look through the laptop and read emails, especially from the alpha." She says, but her face changes slightly. "The Alpha wanted to inspect the town as there were three rogues near the town and his pack. He also requested that some wolves come through and introduce themselves, but he never said who would come," she says before I could comment on anything. She starts the engine to head back into town.

After a few moments, she continues...

"Dad wanted me to email back to the Alpha to agree with everything he had said. Once I did that, mum made the potion. We all sat around the kitchen counter. Dad wanted to slip the potion into your tea when you woke up this morning, but Mum stopped him as she knew Sapphire could smell it in the tea. So I came up with the whole confusion story as I know you would remember certain things, like when he used to give the potion to you when you were younger. I told him I would watch you drink it and make sure I come up with something that will not incriminate him."

"There is something you are not telling me, Em," I say.

She sighed and took a moment before saying. "Dad wasn't happy that the wolves wanted to come into town, but he and mum were arguing when I went to bed, but I listened to what I could."

I looked at her to see why she stopped talking and realized we were at the back of the café.

"What were they arguing about?" I asked as she turned off the engine.

"They seemed worried, but all I could hear was a woman named Faith, and she wanted to wait until someone turned eighteen. I think they know more than they let on about your past, Mila, you not liking your own kind and everything else that has been happening to you." She says.

I stare at my front door and look at the potion bottle in my hand, only realizing I was still holding it.

"Something is up. I feel like I am alone, Em," I say, with tears now flowing down my cheeks.

Emily turns to me and pulls me into a side hug. "Mila doesn't think like that. I believe in you. I always tell you everything that goes on. You are my best friend, sister even. I will be here for you always, and I will definitely help you," she says, tightening her hold.

"What should I do with this?" I ask as I look down at the small bottle in my hand.

"Keep it safe, but I wouldn't drink it. But I would keep it just in case you need to use it someday," she says.

I hugged her and opened the car door to head inside my apartment. I need time to think. Also, I need to talk to Sapphire.
