As Darkness was drinking water out of his bowl in the kitchen, I was taking the cake out of the fridge from yesterday. I baked two 3 centimeter thick chocolate cakes. My plan is to cut them both in half and layer whipped cream with dark chocolate pieces between them with additional cherries on the cream every second cream layer.
Basically, it's like a schwarzwalder.
Laura enjoys sweets, but not too sweet. If there's an option, then she prefers dark chocolate over milk chocolate. When it comes to gummies, then it's usually licorice for her. I still can't get over how someone can genuinely enjoy licorice...
As I started to whip the cream in the mixer, I thought of how I should decorate the cake from the outside. If I actually make this cake like your average German schwarzwalder, then it'll be kind of boring. I mean, come on, it's Halloween. Of course I'm going to decorate it a bit more fitting! So I'll make a pumpkin! So that the schwarzwalder will be a surprise beneath it!
As I turned the mixed to a slower setting, I added the dark chocolate bits into the cream and let it mix. While it was doing that, I opened the jar of cherries and poured the juice into a small bowl. I'm going to use a silicone brush to paint some of the juice on the cake layers. That way, it's more flavorful and isn't so dry compared to the frosting. I took out a larger flat plate, turned off the mixer and took the bowl of cream from the mixer. I then took the chocolate cake and a spatula and started layering.
Chocolate cake, brush on juice, whipped cream and a few cherries.
Chocolate cake, brush on juice and whipped cream.
Chocolate cake, brush on juice, whipped cream and a few cherries.
And last but not least, the last layer of cake on top with a brush of cherry juice.
Presto! Now, onto the next part.
I took two more packets of whipped cream and put them into the bowl and started to whip it in the mixer. In the meantime, I rolled out some dark chocolate flavored fondant. I cut out two triangles, a smaller triangle and a spooky smile. The cream was whipped and I added some orange food coloring and mixed it.
"Hey Tricia, look!" Scarlet waddled over.
"I found some old birthday candles in the storage. Maybe you could use them for your cake!" She said, giving me an open package of birthday candles.
They are indeed old. Besides the design on the package, it doesn't even have a plastic window to see inside the box like most packaging does these days. The box is also very wide. Like for crayons or other pencils. Laura doesn't really believe in birthday wishes by blowing out your candles, but I can't just deny these from Scarlet now.
"Sure, thanks, Scarlet." I thanked her.
"The cake is looking really good! Where did you learn this? Surely from your mother, right?" She asked.
"No, actually. I've been a fan of Alex's cooking shows. My mom only noticed that and bought me one of his 2 cookbooks for Christmas two years ago.. It was all about baking sweets. She said that it's as sweet as me." I answered.
"Oh. My. GOD!! You're a fan of his cooking, too?! I've always wanted to be good at cooking like him! But unfortunately I was always the clumsy one, he he!" She giggled.
"You'll surely save me a slice riiiight?" She asked with puppy eyes.
"Sure! As long as you like cherries, chocolate and cream, then I'll make sure to save you one." I smiled.
