Back when you were a rookie in F2, you made some mistakes, but that was a given. Everyone made mistakes and it was part of the process. You were learning, and so was everyone else. Well, you started off the season with a mistake that you could never live down.
The opening of the season was underway, and you were in Bahrain for preseason testing. You were a last-minute sign, so you like to blame it on that. You were walking past the garages, and you saw your Red Bull livery car, so you assumed you were at your garage. You were the only one with the Red Bull livery in your last season, so you were reasonable to believe so.
Well, it was not your car. It was also not your garage. Heck, it wasn't even your team! Maybe, if you had read the shirts of the people around the car, you would easily know this was not the Hitech garage. It was Campos.
Still, you walked all the way into the back, and surprisingly, no one stopped you. That was a question for another day, but you walked straight through without anyone sparing you a glance.
You had just finished your stint in the car, and you were done until at least lunch due to an engine problem. The engine completely gave out, and it caused you to go straight into the wall. It wasn't too fast because you felt the change in the car and slowed down, but that didn't make the impact any less shocking or tiring. You made your way to the back with your eyes almost entirely closed, so you were even more surprised when you walked into the driver's room and heard a voice. Your teammate was still in their car, so you did not expect anyone to be in the driver's room.
"Who are you and how did you get back here?" The voice sounded, and your eyes snapped open to meet Pepe's eyes. Well, they met his bare chest first, then his eyes. He was in the middle of changing into his race suit, and suddenly, you were deathly aware that this was definitely not your driver's room. Your cheeks grew red with embarrassment as you looked away while Pepe threw on a random t-shirt. You had met him in passing a couple of times, but never actually had a conversation with him. You only knew his name because your friends were closer to him. This was the best first impression.
"Okay let me explain," You rushed out as you threw your helmet and balaclava. You decided it would be better to just forget everything that just happened and figure out a rushed explanation. You looked back up at Pepe to see him looking at you skeptically as you let out a sigh. "I definitely think I have a head injury."
"Huh?" he gasped concerned but he was also trying his best not to laugh. There was no way you just said that, right? You looked fine from what he could tell. He quickly assessed you before coming to the same conclusion: you were not injured whatsoever. "I don't think so."
"No, really," You pressed as you took a seat on the small couch he had in his driver's room. If you were able to somehow sneak your way in here, you were going to treat it like your normal driver's room. Pepe decided not to question it as he took a seat beside you and looked at you questionably. You leaned your head to your hands as you rested your elbows on your knees. At first, Pepe thought you were going to start crying, but when he heard a broken laugh, he let up a bit. You pulled yourself up as you lazily looked over at him. "If I completely mixed up Hitech and Campos, there is something wrong with my head. That crash was no joke."
"You crashed?" Pepe asked sincerely. You didn't know how he completely missed the crash. The session was red flagged for a while, and anyone on track was immediately told of the state of your car before being told to head back to the pits. Your look at Pepe must have asked a thousand questions because he immediately began to defend himself. "So, don't tell anybody, but I was a little late. I'm not supposed to be in the car until the afternoon, so I came in a little later than I normally would have. I just came in."
"You say that like I'm gonna snitch on myself," You snorted and leaned into his side as you both struggled to catch your breaths. It took a minute, but anytime you two made eye contact, it started all over again. "Stop, I can't breathe!"
"I'm not even doing anything!" Pepe tried to defend as his chuckle dwindled down to just deep breaths. "I don't even know why we were laughing so much."
"I don't remember," You chuckled as you finally sat up and turned your body to face Pepe, holding out your hand. "Also, I'm Y/n, don't think I've ever introduced myself."
"Pepe," He stated as he shook your hand. "And I know you. I've seen you around the paddock a lot."
"Wait, then why did you ask who I was?" You asked immediately confused.
"You were a random person walking in on me changing!" He defended, and your cheeks grew red once again at the recently forgotten memory. "It was instinct! How would you feel if you had someone walk in on you shirtless?"
"I mean the situation would be different," You tried to defend. "I mean no one would randomly show up in my driver's room-"
"But that's exactly what happened!"
"Ok, sounds like someone wants an apology," You tried to comfort.
"I don't want an apology," Pepe smirked, "I want to be even."
"Woah woah woah buddy," You chuckled as you put your hands against his chest and lightly pushed away. "I don't take my shirt off until the second date at least, and if I'm taking my shirt off, I'm not paying."
"Okay, I can compromise on that," he teased back. "You pay for the first date, and I'll pay for the second. Deal?"
"Sounds fair to me."
And that was where your relationship started.
