"I don't think I'll be able to make it to Australia in time," You grimaced, looking between your stack of books, plethora of tabs open on your computer and the face of your boyfriend of 3 years. Never, in the history of you being together, have either of you missed the other's birthday, and the idea of missing his caused you more stress than the piling assignments you had. "It's just-"

"You don't need to explain it to me," He whispered into the phone. It was late for him, considering he was still in Japan until the next day for his flight back home. Home being Australia for the long break.

He'd finished the race in second, which was a hell of a lot better than where he started down in eighth. A great result overall for him and the team, especially now going into the first little break of the season.

"You don't have to explain yourself to me," He repeated, "I know you're busy, and you already spend so much of your time coming to the races. Honestly, prioritize yourself this time. I understand."

Sure, he may have said it was okay, but that didn't make it feel any better. He's never missed one of your things, so he was a little bitter that you couldn't be there for his birthday. Granted, he knew you couldn't reschedule your exams, but he could still be upset even if he understood.

He honestly wanted to stay in his room and sulk all day, but at the end of the day, he only got so much time with his family during the season. He was determined (not with the same enthusiasm as usual) to at least hang out with his sisters and parents.

They were in the middle of a cutthroat game of Uno when there were knocks on the door.

"Go open the door," Hattie immediately snapped at him as she guarded her cards. "No peaking!"

"You're closer to the door," He pointed out, scrunching up his nose, "And why would I look at your cards? They're probably bad anyway."

"You never know, but don't keep the person at the door waiting!" She responded, gesturing for him to go.

"Oscar, get the door!" His mom shouted from the kitchen. He rolled his eyes before standing up from the floor and heading over to throw the door open with a huff.

"That's a lot of attitude for a birthday boy," You quipped with a smirk as Oscar froze. He still didn't say anything, or move for that "I didn't know what to get you. I thought TimTams would make up for lying to you."

"You came," He gasped, wrapping you up tightly in his arms as he dropped his head to your shoulder, breathing you in. "That's enough, but the TimTams do make it better. What flavor are they?"

"The cafe latte ones," You whispered back as you set the bag to the side and brought a hand up to cut through the hairs at the nape of his neck. "I remembered how much you liked those when they came out, and I specially ordered them for your birthday."

"What did I do to deserve you?" He sighed, and you could feel the tension leave his body in that moment.

"All because I brought your limited edition TimTams?" You teased, causing him to roll his eyes again, "In all honesty, I don't know how to answer that."

"Aye, bring 'em in, why don't ya!" Hattie shouted from behind him. "You're letting the draft in!"

"You sound like mom," Oscar groaned, moving his arms down to your waist to lift you off of the ground. "We're gonna head to my room."

"No, you're not!" Nicole shouted from the kitchen, walking over to glare at him. "As soon as you hide in your room, you're not coming out until morning. Plus, dinner is almost done. Just relax for a minute. You'll get alone time with them later."

Nicole wasn't lying. She had the homemade dinner ready in under 10 minutes after Oscar had set you down, and he took it upon himself to take your bag up to his room when his sisters bombarded you. After a bit of arguing with his sisters, he eventually just pulled the chair out from under Hattie.

"Hey!"

"It's my birthday, and I should get to sit next to my significant other."

"You always pull the birthday card," She muttered under her breath as she opted to take the seat across from you instead.

"Only on my birthday," He quipped back with a tight smile.

"Can we not fight?" You diffused, putting a hand on Oscar's arm and glancing between the siblings. "I'm here until the next race, and even then," you directed your eyes to Oscar, "I'm going with you."

"You have exams, no?" Oscar asked, tilting his head slightly at you.

"No, not exams," You shook your head, "Just projects and a recorded presentation. All things I can do from a different continent."

"And when were you gonna tell me this?"

"On your birthday?" You sent him a small smile, causing him to scoff in disbelief. "Happy birthday! I love you, and your real gift is actually my presence for the next few months!"

"I'm gonna be sick of you by the end of it, huh?" He chuckled, moving to wrap his arm around your shoulder again, and pulled you closer.

"I'd hope not!" You pouted, glancing at Oscar.

Later that night, after all of the festivities were done, you found yourselves in the one peaceful place: his room with the door locked. Just you two, lying in bed, talking nonsense like always

"You won't actually get sick of me, right?" You asked, pushing yourself up from his chest briefly to meet his eyes under the faint light flowing into the room from the moon.

"I could never get sick of you," He whispered back before pulling you back down and resting his chin on the top of your head as his hand mindlessly drew shapes up and down your arms. "Thank you for surprising me. It's the best birthday present ever."

"How will I top this next year?"

"That's a problem for tomorrow."
