You'd been around the track before. You grew up there. Your dad worked as a traveling technician for Formula 1 and assisted in fixing radio systems. You'd been around to basically every track, and your favorite place to be was in the car park.
Why the car park? Because it wasn't loud or glamorous like the paddock.
You sneaked out of the paddock during some session, the F2 qualifying session if you remembered right. Even though you could've easily walked right back into the track and watched the session, hell you could hear the cars zooming around you, you'd rather watch it on your phone.
It was a pretty uneventful session. Nikola Tsolov on pole again. Shocker. You rolled your eyes before standing up from the curb to kick around a rock. It may have been longer than you thought, but you eventually heard some cars going around the track again and some team people filed the car park. A few of them were drivers you recognized.
"Hey, you drive like shit!" You shouted at the group of them. Maybe one of them would turn around. Thankfully, one did. The one being Laurens Van Hoepen. Yes, a driver you could actually talk about.
"Huh?" He said, slowly deviating from the group, who laughed at him. When he finally stood in front of you, he said, "What did you say?"
"I said, you drove like shit," You said with a smirk, annunciating your words clearly. "Outside the top 10? I'm disappointed. I expected better from you."
He paused, gobsmacked for a second as he looked at you skeptically. He wracked his brain, remembering everything his team said.
"There was nothing you could've done there," his teammate said
"We made a bad call with the traffic," his strategist said
"That caution was untimely," one of his competitors said.
"We'll just make it up during the races," his team owner said.
"You know what, fair," He shrugged, joining you and kicking a different rock around. "The traffic didn't help me, and the car balance was off."
"Sure, but I'm talking about how you lifted into turn 4. There was no one near you, yet you lifted early," You explained, and he slowly looked up at you. "For what?"
"...I uh...," He hesitated. Usually, people wanted the same, predictable answer. Talk about the car and the other drivers, and never admit fault. But you...you weren't media, he thought. He thought he could be honest, for once. "I thought I was going too wide."
