Mathew’s POV:
I was holding her hand securely. She became normal after a few minutes. I was still processing everything she had confessed, and I felt genuinely guilty when she said she felt hurt by my words.
“Mathew,” Catherine’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
She gestured for me to come. I slowly released her hand and walked towards Catherine.
“Don’t disturb her. She’ll wake up in a few minutes. Have a seat,” she said.
I sat down.
“So, what do you want to interpret?” she asked me.
“I’m baffled, and I’m wondering how she endured all this pain without uttering a single word to anyone.”
“That’s true. Even I think about the same,” she said.
“Okay, Catherine. Do me a favour. Don’t tell her that I knew about her treatment or that I found out about her past and everything. Okay?” I said.
“But why?” she asked.
“First, let her trust me. Then she’ll open up to me on her own. I don’t want her to know that I’m already aware of all this. Please,” I said.
“Okay,” she said.
“And one more thing, she thinks you hate her and doesn’t want to live with her. She’s unaware that you’ve actually started falling for her.”
“I’ll take care of that,” I said.
Time Skip
I was waiting for her to wake up so we could head back home. I kept wondering why Juno and Daisy hated her so much. If they disliked her, why did they take her out or invite her to their house?
It was all too confusing. Just then, I saw her slightly shaking her head, she was waking up.
She slowly opened her eyes and scanned her surroundings.
“Hey, Stella. Endhirichitiya?” (Hey, Stella. Are you awake?) Catherine asked.
“Mm…” she mumbled. She looked very tired.
“Have some water,” Catherine said.
She grabbed the glass and sipped some water.
“Ennachu?” (What happened?) she asked.
“Nothing. Oru normal therapy session dhan.” (Just a normal therapy session.) Catherine said.
“Ennachu suddenly? Enna sonna…” (What suddenly happened? What did I say...) Before she could finish, I walked towards her.
“Hey, how are you?” I asked. As soon as she saw me, she lowered her gaze and just nodded.
“Mathew, thanks for waiting outside. Nothing happened here. She just needed some rest, so I made her sleep for a while,” Catherine said, lying on my behalf.
“Okay, shall we leave?” I asked her.
“Haan. Neenga ponga. Naan akka kita pesitu oru 2 mins la varen.” (Yeah, you go. I’ll talk to akka and come in two minutes.) she said.
I knew why she was doing this. I nodded and walked out.
After some time, she came down and got inside the car.
“Are you okay now?” I asked, slightly touching her hand.
“Yes,” she said. She looked very tired, and her eyes no longer had their usual spark.
She kept staring out of the window throughout the journey.
To reach home, we had to cross the beach, and I was scared of how she might react. There was no alternate route either, this was the only way.
She was still gazing out of the window. How was I supposed to tell her to close her eyes?
“Stella…” I called her name.
She looked at me. I grabbed my phone and handed it to her.
She looked confused but took the phone from me.
“Pudi.” (Take it.) I said.
She took it from me.
"Stella, adhula En mail open Pannu and naan solravamgaluku oru mail anupu.", I said.
(Stella, open my mail in that, and send a mail with the lines I say.)
“Seri, aana adhu neengale anupalame?” (Okay, but why can't you send it yourself?) she asked.
“I’m driving la, epdi anupuradhu? It’s very urgent, ipo dha nyabagam vandhuchu.”
(I’m driving, how can I send it? It’s very urgent, I just remembered.)
“Seri, sollunga.” (Okay, tell me.) she said.
I was driving fast so we could cross the beach as quickly as possible.
“Adhuva… write: Hello sir, I’m Mathew. Hope you’re doing well. I would like to inform you regarding the new business which we have undertaken. Idhu ezhudhuniya?”
(Write that… did you type this?) I asked.
“Konjam medhuva sollunga.” (Say it a bit slowly.) she said. I repeated the lines.
My heartbeat increased as we neared the beach.
Later, I told her the remaining lines to type, and she did as I said. Luckily, she was too focused on my phone and didn’t notice what was happening outside the window.
After we crossed the beach, I let out a big sigh of relief.
“Done. Yaaruku anupanum? ID sollunga?” (To whom should I send it? Tell me the email ID.) she asked.
“Haan… yaaruka? Adhu vandhu… mail ID marandhutene…” (Uh… to whom? I forgot the email ID…) I bluffed.
“Pinna epdi anupuradhu indha mail?” (Then how do I send this mail?) she asked.
“Haan… adhu draft la potu vei. Naan thedi anupikiren.” (Uh… just save it in drafts. I’ll send it later.) I said.
"Urgent nu sonniga?", she asked.
(You said it’s urgent?) she asked.
“Aama… but I forgot the mail ID, la? What can be done?” I said.
She switched off the phone and kept it in her hands.
After some time, we reached our house. I asked her to get down, and she was waiting for me to come along.
“Nee po, naan varen.” (You go, I’ll come.) I said. She nodded and went inside.
After making sure she had gone in, I took out her favourite bakery items and other snacks that I had bought from Writer’s Cafe.
I tiptoed into the kitchen and placed them inside the fridge. Then I went in search of her.
She was lying on the bed, eyes closed.
“Romba tired pola?” (Looks like she’s really tired?) I thought and left from there.
“Tonight, I’ll surprise her and she’ll definitely be mesmerized by my move. I can’t wait to see her reaction,” I told myself.
The mirror in my room caught my attention. I looked at my reflection. My smile faded.
I’ve put on weight.
“I’ll figure out what’s making me gain so much weight, tomorrow,” I thought and sat on the bed.
