Mathew’s POV:

I immediately sat up hearing the doctor’s words.

“You shouldn’t eat sugary items and carbohydrates. I’ll suggest some tablets, and you have to take them regularly. Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and lose weight. You’ll be alright,” he said.

“But how did I even get diabetes?” I asked.

“It’s all about the lifestyle you adopted and the food you had, if I’m not wrong,” he said.

I held my head with both hands.

“Take care, Mathew. I’ll visit you next week,” he said and left.

I was silently crying when I felt someone’s hand on my shoulder. I raised my head and looked at the person — it was her.

“I’ve become diabetic,” I said, and immediately she caressed my hair.

“It’s ok. Paravala, we’ll figure it out.”
(It’s okay, we’ll figure it out.) she said.

“Enna figure out panna porom? I'm finished.”
(What are we going to figure out? I'm finished.) I said.

“Don’t say that,” she said and wiped my tears.

“Sleep for a while.”

“Enna parthukalam? Evlo workout panni, evlo physique uh maintain pannen. Ellam pochu.”
(What’s the point now? I worked out so much and maintained such a physique. It’s all gone.) I said.

I was crying, loudly.

Unexpectedly, she hugged me tightly and consoled me.

“Paravala, we’ll fight this together. I'm there for you. Please, azhadhinga.”
(It’s okay, we’ll fight this together. I'm there for you. Please don’t cry.) she said.

I immediately stood up. She was baffled by my sudden move.

“Ennachu?”
(What happened?)

"Thalli ukaru.", I said and with confusion, she moved towards the headboard.

(Move and sit.)

I sat next to her and rested my head on her lap.

“I need peace,” I said, and she started running her fingers through my hair.

I drifted off quickly.

Next Day,

I woke up feeling very tired. That’s when I recalled what had happened the previous night.

Tears formed in my eyes. I quickly got up from the bed only to feel dizzy. I sat back again, holding my forehead.

First sign of diabetes.

I slowly walked out of my room and went in search of her.

I heard her voice from the kitchen. I headed to the kitchen and saw her making food. She was backfacing me and talking to someone over a call.

I smiled, looking at her.

“Nee vera yen d? Nalla irundha avaruku enga amma sonna madhiri ghee, butter, cashews nu nalla weight podura foods samachu kuduthutu irundhen, ana ipdi aagumnu nenaikala. Diabetes varumnu. Ana, avaruku naan samaikira sapadu pudikadhunu nenachen, ana avaru virumbu sapda arambichitaaru naan seira sapada. It made me happy. Ana, enna irundhalum…”
(You know what? I cooked foods like ghee, butter, and cashews just like my mom told me to, thinking they’d help him gain weight because he wasn’t well, I never imagined it’d lead to this. I thought he didn’t like my cooking, but when he started liking and asking for the food I made, it made me happy. But still…)
