Stella's POV:
"Unnoda plans enna kanna? Kalyanam lam pannikalamnu irukiye illaya?" she asked.
(What are your plans, dear? Are you planning to get married or not?)
"Enna yaru ma kalyanam pannipanga?" I said with a bitter smile.
(Who would marry me, ma?)
"Yen? Unnaku enna korachal azhaga iruka, nalla padichi iruka, velai ku poga pora konja naala." she said.
(Why? What’s lacking in you? You’re beautiful, well-educated, and will soon be working.)
"Neenga vera yen ma? Naan Gunda irukuradhu dhan prechanaye."
(What else, ma? The problem is that I’m fat.)
"Idhula enna iruku? Nee Gunda irundhalum azhagu kutty chellam dhan. Aprm, un manasu avlo azhagu, mathavangalu kaga ivlo care panra, andha manasu ke pasanga queue la nipangale."
(So what if you're fat? You’re still cute and beautiful darling. Your heart is so kind, you care so much for others, boys would queue up for a heart like that.)
"Apdi yarum illa ma. Idhu varaikum enna meet panna pasanga, ponnuga ellarum enna Gunda iruken, kevalama irukenu solli dhan kalaichu irukanga. No one said I'm beautiful except for few. Andha sila nalla aalungala neengalum oruthar."
(There’s no one like that, ma. All the boys and girls I’ve met so far have only mocked me for being fat. Hardly anyone has called me beautiful. You’re one of those rare good souls.)
My eyes moistened, thinking about everything I had been through.
"Apdilam illa. Inime unna yarachum apdi kindal pannagana indha amma kita vandhu sollu naan avanga undillanu akiduren, seriya?" she said.
(No such thing, okay? If anyone mocks you again, come a d tell this mother, I’ll tear them apart. Got it?)
I nodded with a bitter smile.
"Amma?" someone’s voice was heard.
(“Mother?)
Regina ma and I turned towards the door.
It was Mathew.
As soon as I saw him, I stood up from my seat.
"Amma, naan aprm varen." I said and before I could leave, a hand caught my wrist.
(Ma, I’ll come later.)
"Enga pora? Ukaru Inga ipo dhana vandha."
(Where are you going? Sit down. You just came.)
"Illa ma. Naan porene."
(No ma, I’ll leave.)
"En kuda konja neram Inga iru da."
(Just be with me for some time.)
I sat down hesitantly hearing her words.
"Vaa da, ukaru." Regina ma called him.
(Come, dear. Sit down.)
I didn’t even look at him, completely focused on Regina ma.
"Did you think about what I said?" amma asked.
He didn’t reply.
"Un kita dhan kekuren. Enna decide panna?" she asked.
(I’m asking you. What have you decided?)
"Naan innum yosikala adha pathi." he replied.
(I haven't thought about that yet.)
"Apo one pannalam naan pakura ponnaye kalyanam panniko." she said.
