Chapter 50: Taste

It was probably already morning.

Shen Minglou thought to himself and shifted towards the warm spot he felt. The sofa beneath him was bathed in warm sunlight, warming up his hands as well.

He lay on the sofa, his unfocused gray eyes gazing at the presence that brought him warmth. In a daze, he felt as if his eyes had healed, the glaring white light seemed to dispel all the darkness surrounding him.

These past few nights, he had trouble sleeping soundly.

Xiao Yue told him to sleep early, but he just couldn't close his eyes. For him now, what was the difference between closing his eyes and keeping them open?

When he opened them, he saw darkness, and when he closed them, it was still dark.

He wanted to peacefully drift into slumber, but he had to wait in darkness, waiting for time to slowly pass, waiting for his body to feel drowsy so he could briefly enter into sleep.

By midnight, he would startle awake from his dreams. His clothes soaked with sweat, strands of hair stuck to his face with sweat, the sound of insects from the garden downstairs filled his ears, his breathing erratic along with the constant thumping of his heart in his chest.

Every sensation was magnified infinitely in the dead of night, he wanted to stay calm in bed, but even the path where the sweat trickled down felt so vividly present, he felt like he was being consumed by something.

From his feet to his head, darkness was about to tear him apart into scattered fragments.

In a wordless terror, a vague sense of nausea crept up in his stomach, followed by the surge of stomach acid and acid reflux in his esophagus. He hurriedly got up from the bed and rushed out of the room, following the path he had walked many times before into the bathroom, emptying everything in his stomach into the toilet.

Tears and saliva burst out together, he wanted to pour his pain and grievances down the drain along with these things, but no matter how much he fantasized about it, the pain and grievances remained within his body.

After tidying up his disheveled self, he didn't want to enter his room again, so he felt his way to the sofa in the living room, keeping his eyes open, waiting for the arrival of daylight.

The sunlight made him drowsy, in his haze, he suddenly remembered the day he watched the sunset with his senior brother.

His eyes were much better back then, even if he couldn't clearly see how the sunset was that day, he still felt it was the most beautiful sunset he had ever seen.

The warmth from that day was the same as now.

It's just that he had never seen his senior brother's face, a few years ago it was a blurry face, now it was a figure melded into the darkness.

Was he really a living person, or was he a figment of his imagination?

How could someone suddenly barge into his life, then quietly leave and reappear years later like now?

How did he give his naive heart to someone without even knowing their name or contact information?

He truly is a fool.

The kind of person you shouldn't trust...

In a daze, he seemed to hear Qin Zhichen's voice.

"Are you awake?"

He was a bit unsure if this was a dream or reality, and replied groggily, "Yes."

He felt Qin Zhichen by his side, the faint scent of perfume on him was a familiar smell that relaxed him, easing him into a dream-like state.
