" He's coming home today from the Moss Center," Spencer said precisely as he sat in his wheelchair at the kitchen table feeding five month old Miracle organic peas while she sat in her pink and green high chair. " Richard is picking him up today and bringing him home. He's coming home. "

About time, he thought. It had been a long few months since his husband's Christmas day stroke during dinner. Too long. Spencer had been busy with the kids especially the baby , his work part time doing the books for Nigel's restaurant in Bethesda, his daily visits to the rehabilitation center where DuBuis was doing physical therapy , occupational therapy and speech therapy and preparing the house for his arrival back. He had kept their family and friends up to date regularly on the progress of DuBuis' care. He had been so busy that he had informed the college he would not be returning for the new semester which had started in January. He hadn't planned to anyway with the baby whose biological mother had not been located. It was far easier bringing the baby to the restaurant than it would have been to the college. He didn't mind. The college was so far away from his life he barely missed it. He liked that he had been busy. He needed to be busy. Because he dearly missed his husband.

" That's great," Sol Klein said as he glanced over his cereal at Luci across the table. Luci had recently turned thirteen in January and was now more quiet than before. Which worried everyone including Sol. It had actually happened after her uncle's stroke. She had withdrawn from everything and everyone. She dropped out of the musical theater club and the science club which had disappointed their teacher and family friend Lyle Peters. She hadn't posted on FireBook or made a podcast for her transgender journey YouTube and Tik Tok in forever. All she did was study harder than ever, take her hormones regularly and keep her thoughts to herself. She wouldn't even visit her uncle in the rehab which saddened both Spencer and DuBuis. " Isn't that great, Luce? "

Luci shrugged at him and lowered her head with her long chestnut brown hair falling into her thinner brown face. She wore a long sleeved black sweater and baggy black jeans with beat up combat boots which lately was her outfit of choice. She remained silent as she ignored her own cereal and read her science textbook.

Theodore, who had turned fifteen in February, was texting his fifteen year old boyfriend Alan Kendall who was stressing over them becoming freshmen in the fall. He smiled slightly. His feelings for Alan were getting so strong that even the boy's stresses were cute to him. " I'm glad," he said as he lifted his eyes to look at his uncle. " He looked better last time we visited. I think he did. "

" He is better," Spencer said firmly as he wiped off Miracle's face with a hypoallergenic wet wipe to get rid of stray food. The baby cooed at him , saying," Gaga , gaga. " Then she reached out and patted his nose softly which prompted a smile on his face. " Much better. Luci , eat your cereal. You barely touched it. You need to eat before the bus to school. "

Luci ignored both him and the untouched cereal before her.

Spencer looked at her and bit his lip.

Theodore lifted his eyes from his phone and Alan to look at Sol.
