The only one at the Norland - Lane home that morning was Spencer and his foster daughter Miracle. Miracle was in her crib in the nursery sleeping after a rousing Tummy Time activity with Spencer downstairs in the living room reading. He was feeling a little tired and on edge and wasn't sure why. Maybe it was the new  neighbor next door that was destined to make his life miserable. Maybe it was that for the last couple of months his niece by marriage had undergone some type of mystery personality transplant. Maybe it was his husband's moods shifting as fast as Luci when his continuing recovery was not going as smoothly as he wanted it to go. All in all he was content to be alone and reading while DuBuis was at the grocery store.

Until he heard the most awful noise outside in his back yard.

Alarmed , he eased his motorized wheelchair from the living room to the deck area of the house where he slid down the backyard ramp. At the very end he saw the source of the horrible noise.

And he got mad.

Very very mad.

There were three men in his backyard cutting down his crabapple tree !

" What are you doing ! ," Spencer called out as he sped towards them as fast as he could get his chair to go. " That tree is not to be destroyed ! Stop ! Why are you here ? "

One of the big burly White men in faded dirty jeans and a white tee shirt that said Duke's Tree And Debris Removal on the front stepped in front of Spencer to prevent him from getting closer to the tree which was coming down steadily. The man growled ," Stay back, sir. Don't want you to get hurt by no falling branches or nothing now do we ? "

Spencer narrowed his eyes at him. " This tree was not supposed to be cut down. Why..... Who..... Why are you here? This is a terrible mistake ! "

The man looked confused as he shook his head. " Ain't no mistake, sir. We got a call from a Mrs. LuLu Simms who kept trying to say her last name was Salmon for some reason. She said she owned this house and wanted the tree taken down as a nuisance or something. She said it was dangerous. Didn't look dangerous to me but a job is a job. "

Spencer's mouth fell open. For the first time in his whole life he was speechless as his eyes went over to the house next door where he saw LuLu looking from her kitchen window at the chaos in his backyard.

The woman was smiling in a very evil way.

Spencer thought, This was now war. That woman was the enemy now.
