Faith woke up in a piss poor mood from hell.
First the sucker punch and arrest from some damn stupid rookie yesterday.
Then the date with Joy last night that had turned bad in such a weird way.
It was why she had called into work almost as soon as she opened her eyes that morning. She couldn't nor didn't want to be standing over some body with Nita Browne's nosy ass anyway until her eye and bruises healed up anyway , she thought as she peered at herself in the bathroom mirror. Plus she was not totally sure she could keep what happened quiet at work. Sure it all went down in another county but Montgomery wasn't that fucking far from PG. How long could she keep this from her department? And from her own family? Especially if it went to court, she mentally groaned as she opened up a bottle of aspirin and swallowed two tablets dry. She wanted to wash it down with a beer but her apartment was clean of booze. It was best not to go down that path anyway. She hadn't had a drink in a while. She wanted to call Andrew for a talk but best not to head down that particular path either. If she discussed any of this with the man she considered her sponsor and father figure it would mean talking about the arrest.
Shit. That fucking arrest. She was a damn cop and had been arrested for no reason. Hit by some punk ass cop. She idly wondered if that bastard would have done any of it if she had been White. Or even a man of any color. So even as a cop she wasn't protected as a Black woman. That was just too fucked up in her head. Too too fucked up. She herself tried to treat people fair in her job. She wasn't going to kiss ass with none of these suspects she encountered but she would never have done any of that done to her yesterday. That bastard uniform piece of shit. She wished he had taken off that damn gun and let her get in a couple good hits herself. Little bitch turd. He needed flushed down the toilet fast.
She headed to the kitchen and opened her refrigerator to see absolutely nothing but a box of baking soda and a half empty milk container and some leftovers from her favorite taco restaurant down the street. She made a face and slammed the door hard. Look like grocery day again. Although in her case that meant heading to her brother's for a few food items from his frig. She would go to her Mama's but not with her living with that rich White man in that bougie neighborhood of theirs where the streets were too empty and too clean and the neighbors too snooty. Nicholas was nice and all that; Nigel's daddy and all but she didn't do Evergreen Acres. She had already been stopped once this week.
She heard her cell going off with texts. She grabbed it from the counter where it rested next to the coffee maker that she got secondhand from DuBuis when he and Spencer got a new one. She actually started brewing coffee before she looked at the texts though, thinking about the old corny joke Melinda used to make all the time.
( " The bible is sexist you know. It says He Brews. " )
Then Melinda would laugh at her lame joke like she was Chris Rock or something. Damn. Sometimes she missed the woman. Least she never had walked out on her after a kiss. Hell. She never have had that happen to her before.
First text she saw was from Richard who was not a bad criminal defense attorney. Man was wasted with taxes and corporate shit in her opinion. He knew his shit.
Richard: I'm meeting with the assistant state attorney today about your matter. I want to get the charges either dropped or a plea bargain for no time and a fine.
She made another face and quickly responded back with " No plea. I'm a cop. I can't have a record. And I don't want anyone to know about this. Get it dropped. But I want an apology from that bitch uniform. Who the fuck he think he is? ". Then she hit send.
Richard almost immediately replied with," I'll try my best. But if my best isn't good enough it will become public knowledge. "
She sighed. She would deal with that then.
She looked at the other text. Joy. What the hell was that woman's issue? She thought the date was going well. Real well. Then she kissed her and Joy Jones stepped. She knew Joy liked the kiss so what? Did she realize just then that a pastor was too good for a fucking drunk and a cop with a high school education and a handful of online college classes under her belt?
Joy : Faith , I'm sorry about last night. I know I don't deserve a second chance but I want to explain. Please have lunch with me. Richard and Nigel's part two today? I'll pay.
She hesitated as she poured coffee in her favorite mug and took a sip. Then she grabbed her phone again and texted back," Sure. What time should we meet? "
