" I'm going to take Luci a plate up in her room," Spencer said as they ate their spaghetti, meatballs and green salad in total uncomfortable silence. " I think I can manage that on the chair lift. Maybe. She should not be skipping meals. She's too skinny as it is. That's not healthy. I've read a few articles on just that topic. Eating disorders in teenagers."
DuBuis cut his eyes at his husband. " Luci does not have an eating disorder. She has an attitude disorder. And you will not. This is not your house growing up. We don't have servants to serve us in our rooms. You are her uncle not her butler. She wants to eat she can come downstairs like everyone else at the dinner hour. " He reached for his glass of water and almost dropped it from his suddenly unsteady hand. " Damn. Good ttthing I'm not a surgeon right? "
Sol looked up at DuBuis. " It's not just you. She hates us all. " Then he lowered his head and played with his spaghetti noodles.
After that they returned to silence again until Theodore looked at everyone gathered around the kitchen table and then stood up , saying," I'm finished eating. May I be excused? I have homework to do. "
DuBuis opened his mouth but Spencer was quicker as he said," Of course. That one article on eating disorders said you should never force a child to eat or you will create unhealthy eating patterns. "
Theodore smiled faintly at his uncle and then left the room swiftly.
DuBuis sighed. " I never thought I would see studying and homework become the preferred hobby around here. "

Theodore did go upstairs but not to the room he now shared with Sol. He went past it and the nursery where Miracle slept until he got to Luci's bedroom with its closed door.
He hesitated outside it. Then he knocked once.
" Go away," Luci snapped from inside the room.
Theodore didn't listen. He opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind him. He moved over to the desk where Luci still read her textbook. She quickly glanced at him and said in sharp voice," I said go away. "
" I don't care what you said. Everyone has been dancing around you forever and it sucks. What is your problem ! You're treating us all like shit and we don't deserve it. Ok. Maybe I do. I know I can be.... difficult sometimes but. But they don't. Sol cares about you. He really does. He's hurt. And DuBuis and Uncle Spencer..... they love you. They've been good to us all. They gave you and me homes when our mothers both just basically abandoned us to them. They didn't have to do that. It sucks how you are acting. "
Luci stood up and pointed her finger at him. " You don't know anything. Ok. How I'm acting, in your words , is my business. Not yours. Ok. Just get out. Go play your violin. Or go stick your bow up your tight ass ! "
Theodore shook his head. " Luci , what happened to you ? Something changed after DuBuis got sick. Why are you treating us like this? Especially him ? It's like you blame us for something. What did we do? "
Luci ducked her face behind her long curtain of hair so he couldn't see the tears filling her eyes. " Just go away. I don't blame any of you for anything. I don't hate any of you. Especially Uncle D. It's me that's to blame. "
Theodore took a step closer to her. " What do you mean? Hey..... Are you crying? "
Luci shook her head. " No. Just go away. Leave me alone. It's what I deserve. "
