Spencer was still mad as he wheeled himself out on the front porch. He wasn't mad at DuBuis. He loved his husband. He loved every aspect of the man including the fact that he was as religious as he was. He loved his devotion to his religion even if he could not understand it. In fact when recently DuBuis had mentioned the pastor had asked him to be a lay minister there at the church he had been strangely proud of his husband and encouraged him to go for it. Just because he couldn't understand DuBuis' faith didn't mean he wanted to separate him from it. Far from it. Truthfully his one visit to the church he had actually enjoyed it on a purely academic level. It was like going to visit some unknown far off tribe and learning from them.

He wasn't mad at his husband.

He was mad at God. He blamed God for so much that had gone wrong in his life.

Losing his father as a child and essentially losing him as a blood father now although he still loved Andrew so much.

Doris as a mother.

Being raped by Skip Sands twice.

Being shot.

He felt like he was being punished for something but he didn't know exactly what that something was.

And even more than God he was mad at himself. Especially about Theodore. He was that boy's legal guardian. He was supposed to protect him. Yet look what had happened.

He felt inadequate, and for the first time in his forty years of life he felt like he knew nothing.

He sighed and shook his head. Fine. He couldn't cancel Christmas but that didn't mean he needed to celebrate it. Which he was not. Not this year. Maybe not any future year either.

Suddenly he heard an odd mewling sound coming from under the porch swing. He shook his head again. Not more stray pregnant cats like Algebra. He didn't think there were more in the neighborhood.

He rolled his chair over to examine the swing area closer. Then his eyes widened. He made sure his seatbelt was fastened before leaning over in his chair and reaching out for what he saw before him that was currently under the swing.

He pulled out what turned out to be not a pregnant cat or a kitten but a naked  baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket. It was a girl, he realized as he cradled the child whose big blue - green eyes looked up at him with such innocence.

And there was a note attached to the blanket. It said," Please take care of my baby. My Miracle. "

" DuBuis ! ," he called out sharply as he gently stared at the baby who calmly stared back at him.
