"And then she brushed me off with a wave of her regal hand. Not even a word, just a... like I'm her cabana boy. Next thing you know, instead of walking out the room, she'll make you bow and back out. Imperious attitude. She never gives it a rest. I schlepped her to the doctor the other day — by command, not request — and the elevator operator there greeted us nice and friendly. Her doctors on the second floor, and by the time we got there, that operator was in tears." Grandma waffles

"Whew!" Mom says, looking at me and Rory.

"What?" Grandma asks

"Well, mom, you just did 20 straight minutes on gran." Mom tells her

"It wasn't 20 minutes." Grandma denies

"It was getting there." I add

"How about a moratorium on the gran stories for a bit?" Mom suggests

"Fine. I'd rather not spoil the meal with talk of her. I should just wash my hands." Grandma says

"Okay. Well wait." Rory states

"I mean, of her." Grandma tells us

"Oh, good. Wash those hands." Mom jokes

"She sucks her olive pits..." grandma begins

"Short moratorium." Mom whispers to me and Rory.

"Trying to extract every last ounce of flavour out of them, like she does people." Grandma continues

"She sucks flavour out of people?" Mom questions

"Can we change the subject?" I ask

"Life, not flavour." Grandma corrects mom

"Hey, you know what gran needs?"

"What?"

"A fella." Mom responds

"With or without an umbrella." Rory adds

"He'd have to look like an olive pit." Grandma says

"It's like a Dean Martin roast." I tell mom and Rory

"Those are never funny to me." Rory's says

"Yeah, they're mean." Mom agrees.

"Except for don rickles."

"Totally except for rickles."

"I think she had a man for a time squiring her around to her biddy affairs. Richard thought so too and it horrified him." Grandma says

"Didn't want a new daddy, huh?"

"Then he seemed suddenly out of the picture." Grandma continues to tell us

"So great grandma never talked about him?" Rory asks

"Never. Even though I could tell practically the day she stopped seeing him. Those kind of things are always obvious." Grandma says, directly to Rory.

"Yeah, I guess." Rory shrugs

"When a couple is in a relationship, and then suddenly isn't." Grandma carries on, still looking at Rory as she nods.

"Is she still looking?" Rory questions me and mom

"Yep." I tell her

"Right. Um, you know, grandma, did I mention that, unfortunately, I'm not with Dean anymore." Rory says

"No, you didn't."

"Well, I'm not." Rory smiles

"Well, yes, I've known for weeks actually, but it's good that you confirmed it." Grandma tells her
