T: I can't believe you thought that was an acceptable way to handle that situation, Lucy.
L:What's your problem, Tim? I was trying to take initiative!
T:Initiative? You mean reckless disregard for your safety. You almost got yourself hurt out there because you couldn't follow the plan!
L:I knew what I was doing! I'm not some rookie anymore!
T:You sure about that? Because from where I was standing, it looked like you were one step away from getting shot.
T: You didn't even wait for backup!
L: The suspect was getting away!
N:Oh no, this isn't good...
Aa:Yeah, this is about to explode.
L:I made a call, Tim. Sometimes, you don't have time to wait around for backup. I assessed the situation and acted. That's what we do.
T:You didn't "assess" anything. You charged in blind. There was no plan, and you almost paid the price. If I hadn't shown up, we'd be talking about something a lot worse right now.
L:So now you're saying I can't handle myself? I don't need you to play hero every time something doesn't go according to plan!
T:I'm saying you need to stop acting like a reckless rookie. You know what your problem is, Lucy? You think you've got something to prove, but all you're doing is proving why you didn't make detective.
L:Wow. Right way to rub it in my face, huh? Always bringing that up. Every single time!
T:Because it matters, Lucy! You keep making the same dumb mistakes, over and over. You want to know why you didn't make detective? THIS is why!
L:What's wrong with you, Tim? Why do you keep acting like I'm some kind of screw-up? I'm out there busting my ass, and you can't wait to tear me down!
T:What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you? You're still making the same dangerous, impulsive decisions. I'm trying to keep you alive, and you act like it's no big deal! You didn't make detective because you think you know better than everyone else. That's your ego talking, and it's going to get you killed!
L: My ego? At least it's not as big as yours, Tim! You walk around acting like you're the only one who knows how to do this job, like you're the only one keeping us all alive.
L: Newsflash: you're not invincible, and you're not always right!
Aa:Oooh...
N:Yeah, that hit a nerve.
T:Excuse me? You think this is about my ego? I've been doing this job long enough to know the difference between confidence and stupidity. And what you pulled today was the latter.
L:I'm not stupid, Tim! Just because I didn't make detective doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. I don't need you throwing it in my face every time something goes wrong!
T:Then stop giving me reasons to! You keep acting like you've got something to prove, and you know what? You do. Because until you stop making reckless decisions like today, you'll never make detective. You'll keep holding yourself back, and you'll keep putting your life—and everyone else's—on the line.
L:You think I haven't already figured that out? I know why I didn't make detective, Tim. I don't need you reminding me every five seconds. But I'm not going to stand here and let you treat me like I'm beneath you because of it.
A: Tim, seriously, you're going too far.
T:Maybe if you listened for once, I wouldn't have to! You're so busy proving you can handle things, but you don't stop to think. You never think about the consequences, Lucy! What you did today wasn't bravery—it was pure recklessness, and you know it.
L:Oh, so you're the only one allowed to take risks? The great Tim Bradford, who's never made a mistake in his life? Give me a break! You've put yourself in danger a million times, but somehow when I do it, I'm the reckless one?
T:The difference is, I know how to control a situation. I don't run in half-cocked just because I feel like I can handle it. And maybe that's why I got promoted, that's why I was made sergeant, and you... didn't.
Aa:Wow... that's rough.
N:Okay, this is out of hand. They're not even talking about the job anymore.
L:You know what? Screw you, Tim. I've earned my place here, detective or not. I'm not going to let you belittle me every chance you get just because I didn't get the promotion. I don't need your approval, and I don't need you constantly cutting me down.
T:Then start acting like it, Lucy! You want respect? Earn it by not making the same reckless, ego-driven decisions that could've gotten you killed today. I'm trying to keep you alive, and all you care about is proving you're not a failure.
L:And all you care about is making sure I never forget it. You can't stand that I'm not perfect, that I didn't live up to whatever impossible standard you've set for me. Well, guess what? I'm not going to apologize for being human.
T:No one's asking you to be perfect, but I am asking you to start acting like a cop who knows how to stay alive. Because today? You didn't.
L:And what about you? How many times have you put yourself on the line, Tim? How many times have you taken risks that could've gone bad? You want to talk about ego? Look in the mirror. You think you're the only one who can do this job right, and I'm sick of it.
T:I don't put people at risk because of my ego, Lucy. I've learned from my mistakes, and that's the difference between us. You? You haven't learned a damn thing.
L:Yeah, well, I'm done trying to live up to your impossible standards. I'll do my job the way I know how, and if that's not good enough for you, then maybe you're the one with the problem, not me.
A:This has gone way too far. You two need to step back and cool off.
J:Seriously, this is getting toxic.
Aa:They're both about to blow up.
N:Let them finish. They clearly need to get this out.
L:I'm done, Tim. I don't need to prove anything to you, and I sure as hell don't need you treating me like a failure.
T:Then stop acting like one. Because until you do, this conversation isn't over.
