LM:Lucy, I'm going to be blunt: you need to quit this job. This isn't some cute phase anymore; you're putting your life on the line every day, and for what? We didn't raise you to make reckless decisions like this.
L:Mom, it's not reckless! I'm a trained officer, I know exactly what I'm doing. I get that you're worried, but this is my life. I love what I do, and I'm not going to give it up just because you're scared.
LD:Lucy, don't talk to your mother like that. You're making it sound like this is about a small fear or misunderstanding. This isn't just a "concern." We're terrified because every day we hear about officers getting hurt or worse. And the fact that you refuse to understand that is honestly... selfish.
L:Selfish? I'm doing this job to help people. How is that selfish? I thought you'd be proud of me for putting myself out there, not trying to force me to quit.
LM:You know what would make us proud? If you used your degree and got a respectable, safe job. You're smart, Lucy, too smart to be risking yourself like this. This is the kind of career for people who don't have options, and that's not you.
L:That's unfair. You make it sound like I'm wasting my potential. I'm helping people, making a difference. This is exactly where I want to be, and it's exactly what I worked for.
LD:Lucy, we're done with this back-and-forth. I don't care if you've "always wanted this." You're putting us through hell every time you step out that door. It's one thing to follow your dreams, but it's another thing to be reckless and ignore everyone who cares about you. I can't sit here and watch you choose this path anymore.
L:I can't believe you're saying this. I thought you'd support me. I'm careful out there, I'm trained, and I don't take unnecessary risks. I'm not some reckless rookie. I'm a capable officer, and I know how to protect myself.
LM:Oh, please. Don't kid yourself. You think just because you're "trained" that nothing bad can happen to you? That's not how the real world works, Lucy. You're risking your life, plain and simple. We shouldn't have to live in constant fear because you've decided to play hero.
L:"Playing hero"? Really, Mom? You think that's what this is to me? I've worked my whole life to get here. I'm not "playing" anything,I'm doing a job that matters.
LD:Maybe it matters to you, but it's killing us. You're refusing to understand that. We've sat by quietly, thinking you'd eventually come to your senses, but it's clear you're set on ignoring what this is doing to us. I don't know how else to get through to you.
L:Dad, I hear you, but I don't know what you expect me to do. I'm not quitting just because you're scared. This is my career, and it's important to me. I thought you'd be able to respect that.
LM:Respect it? We're supposed to "respect" you choosing a job that puts you in the line of fire every day? You think that's reasonable? This job has taken over your life, and now it's taking over ours. You've become obsessed with this idea of "making a difference" like it's worth dying for.
L:It is worth it to me. I'm not walking away because you don't like it. I'm out there actually doing something meaningful, and if you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.
LD:Lucy, we don't care how "meaningful" it is. We care about you being alive. I'm tired of the excuses, and I'm done with this dream of yours taking priority over everything else. We have asked you over and over to consider other options, and you just brush us off. It's insulting, honestly.
L:I'm not brushing you off. I hear everything you're saying. But this isn't some hobby I'm going to outgrow. It's my career, my life. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean I'm going to throw it away.
LM:You know what, Lucy? Maybe we've been too nice about this. You clearly don't care what we think. So, let me make this clear: if you keep doing this job, you're doing it on your own. I'm tired of this constant worry and heartbreak.
L:Wait, so now you're threatening to cut me off because I don't want to leave my job? You can't be serious.
LD:Maybe she's right. Maybe that's what it's going to take for you to realize how much this is hurting us. We can't keep pretending to support a career that's likely to put you in the hospital, or worse. If you're set on being reckless, don't expect us to stand by and watch it.
L:I can't believe this. I've worked so hard to get here, and instead of supporting me, you're telling me I'm on my own?
LM:Yes, Lucy. Because we're tired of this, and we're done trying to talk sense into you. You're too stubborn to listen, and I won't keep losing sleep over it. I want a daughter who's safe and successful, not one who's playing cop and risking everything.
L:Wow. You really don't understand me at all, do you? I'm not "playing cop." I'm out there making a difference, helping people who need it. I thought you'd be proud, but clearly, you're just ashamed.
LD:Don't turn this around on us. You're the one who's choosing a life that we can't support. And if that's the path you're dead-set on, then fine, but don't expect us to keep watching from the sidelines while you gamble with your life.
L:I'm not "gambling" with anything. I know the risks, and I'm choosing to face them because I believe in what I do. But clearly, you'll never understand that.
LM:We don't want to understand a job that might get you killed, Lucy. We've raised you to be smart, careful, and successful. Watching you throw it all away for some "cause" isn't something we're willing to accept. So, if you won't reconsider, don't expect us to keep watching you destroy yourself.
L:Fine. If you can't support me, then don't. But I'm not changing who I am because you're scared. I'm proud of what I do, and if that's not good enough for you, then that's your problem, not mine.
LD:Then I guess we have nothing left to discuss.
L:I'm not giving up my job! It's my dream!
LM:If you do NOT leave this job, you are no longer our daughter.
