It was a cold and quiet Saturday night in (Y/N)'s dormitory. The little flames on the candles flickered in the breeze coming through the slightly ajar window. The room was cold with the autumnal wind but (Y/N) wasn't fazed, clad in a thick blanket shielding her from the seasonal drop in temperature. This year's summer had been surprisingly warm for Britain and the sudden cold of the incoming later months came rather quickly. The early nights and the bite of the chill were quick to nip at everyone so used to the warm sun on their faces. Still, (Y/N) was not quite aware that her dormitory was getting colder and colder as the long hand on the clock ticked by with every minute that passed. She was too focused on the clutter of parchment and books scattered across her desk tucked into the corner of the room, shadowed by her and her roommate's bunk bed. Aside from the gentle whistle of the wind, the only sound in the room was the furious scratch of (Y/N)'s quill dancing across the parchment, followed by the dip into the ink pot, only to resume the sound again.

Discarded on the bed next to (Y/N) was a collection of letters from an array of people sent to her over the past few days. The earliest was sent by Garreth Weasley about a Halloween party she had been invited to this evening. Halloween night took place on Monday night this year, 1898, and therefore the Seventh Years had decided to throw the party on the Saturday to make use of the holiday as much as they could. The letter was riddled with statements such as; 'It's our last year at school, we must celebrate...' and 'It would be unfair to those who invented Halloween to abandon their holiday purely because of studies...' Despite this, (Y/N) would not be attending the party. (Y/N) was taking Advanced Astronomy this year along with History of Magic, which meant she had no respite from the constant assignments, required reading, essays, studies, and outside research. She had a paper due next week involving the study of dark matter and dark energy and she had not a moment to lose to dedicate her time to it. It was something she hadn't quite grasped in the far too few lessons she had had on the subject and therefore was left to do her own research. She had written to Garreth quickly thereafter stating she would be unable to attend. Garreth replied with a letter insisting she come nonetheless. He did not receive a response.

Among the other letters was a letter from Poppy Sweeting asking if she was going to attend the party to which (Y/N) replied with a no. Poppy wrote back saying that she too should probably be doing work and that (Y/N) would be sorely missed. There was a letter from (Y/N)'s mother and sister, both wishing her happy times at Hogwarts. And on top of that were three separate letters from Sebastian Sallow. The first came shortly after Garreth's asking if she was going to attend the party to which (Y/N) replied with no again. Only an hour later did (Y/N) receive a letter from Sebastian conveying a very dramatic upsetness at (Y/N)'s absence from the party. Just like Garreth, (Y/N) did not reply to Sebastian's insistence but Sebastian seemed to be unfazed by (Y/N)'s lack of response and sent another letter again insisting that she accompany him to the party. (Y/N) still did not reply. (Y/N), while she was sure she'd have fun at the party, wasn't wholly enthralled by such an endeavour even if she wasn't drowned in schoolwork. Everyone always made a fool of themselves when they drank and unfortunately, while (Y/N) did not want to admit it, (Y/N) joined that party when she was drunk too and she despised the feeling of guilty dread she often woke up with, along with the grinding headache and feeling of incurable nausea.
