If you told me I'd be starting my senior year sitting in front of a computer screen doing my classes, I would've called you crazy.
But here I am.. starting my senior year. In front of a computer.
Covid has hit Los Angeles and now we're stuck in our homes. Fun times. Yay..
My phone rings from my bed and I get up and answer it. "Hello?" I say. "Hey, pretty girl. How's the first day of classes?" Miles asks. "They're going okay. They just started.." I say.
"It's 1PM, Lyds. You're just starting?!" Isabelle says. "Belle?" I say. "Oh. Sorry! We're connected with Julian, Isabelle, and Nate." Miles says. "That would've been nice to know before I exposed myself." I say.
"We know you're a night owl, it's okay." Miles says with a laugh. "Hush." I say. "How is everyone else's classes going?" I ask. "Fun. Even though I'm cheating in every class." Julian says.
"Out of everyone, I knew you'd be the one to do that." I say. "Let's be honest, we all did." Miles says. "Hey! I'm not that predictable." Julian says. "Yea you are." The rest of us say at the same time.
"Jerks." Julian whispers, thinking we can't hear him. "We heard that." Nate says. "You guys were meant to hear it! What? Did you think I whisper to myself?" Julian asks. "That also sounds like something you'd do." I say.
"Whatever. Bye losers." Julian says before hanging up. "I'm going to go too. I should probably get started on these classes." I say.
"Have fun!" Miles says. "I'll try." I say before hanging up.
*********
My phone goes off with a loud alarm. I rush over and pick it up.
It's the news app saying the dam broke. What the heck.
My phone rings again and it's Nate. I answer it immediately.
"Are you okay?!" I ask immediately. "No. I'm not okay. Not at all." Nate says. "What's wrong?!" I ask. "The dam.. the water. It's all over." Nate says, a panicked tone behind his voice.
I pull up Life360 and go to our circle. Nate is directly in the path. I get up from my bed and grab my keys before rushing out.
"Where are you going?!" Carla asks as she watches the news. "I'll be back." I say as I go out the door. I hear her call my name as I shut the door. I rush to my car and get in.
"Lydia. Don't come." Nate says. "Where are your parents?" I ask as I set my phone on my stand in my car. "Work. Their work is still in person." Nate says. I can see the water in the frame now.
I speed down our neighborhood road, rushing to where the directions are taking me.
**********
"The water. It's higher now." Nate says. He doesn't sound like Nate. The normal happy tone is gone from him, replaced with a hopeless one. "I'm getting you out of there." I say as I park my car on the side of the road.
I see Nate's house and I see all the water. I walk through the water and get to the house. The water is to my waist and I can feel the pressure it is putting on my body.
I hit his door with my shoulder, trying to break it open. That's when the call drops. "No. No." I whisper to my self as I hit the door harder. The door falls and I fall into deep water.
I swim to the surface and look around. I see the jacket Nate is always wearing and I know he had to be over there. I swim as fast as I can, but the pressure is pushing me back.
I push as hard as I can and that's when I feel something under me. I submerge under the water and I see Nate. I pick him up but he's too heavy. I use all of my breath to use my strength and I pull him up.
I swim out of the house, pulling him along. I sit him up and walk with my arm around his shoulders, bringing him to where my car is. Luckily, to get to his neighborhood, you have to go down a hill then turn right. That's where my car is.
But it's so far and my body feels heavy. I continue going, ignoring all the pain in my body as I lay him carefully down on the road where my car is. I sit next to him and start doing compressions.
"Don't die on me. Please. Please." I say to myself as I continue doing CPR. He breathes heavily before coughing up water. I look around his body, searching for any injury. I pull out my phone and dial 911 as I check him.
