The day had gone by in a blur, but as I sat across from Chris at the kitchen table, I couldn't help but feel a spark of joy in the simplicity of our conversation. He was animatedly recounting his latest online school assignment, his face alight with excitement.

"We had to create a mini volcano, and mine erupted perfectly!! I can't wait to show you and Dad the video," he exclaimed, his hands animatedly mimicking the explosion.

"Sounds fun! You might just be the next great scientist." I teased, ruffling his hair. "What else do you have before thanksgiving break?"

Thanksgiving was right around the corner, the leaves were turning colors and my favorite season was finally back.

"Just a few more assignments! I'm ahead so I think I'll finish by the end of this week!" He says, the enthusiasm painting his face.

I smiled at his energy. It was moments like these that reminded me of the joy that came from little things. It also reminded me of why I'm still here. For him. And for dad.

Just then, the front door opened, and Dad walked in, his uniform crinkled and in need of ironing. "Hey guys. What's got you two so smiley?" He asks.

"Chris was just telling me about his impressive volcano project." I say, smiling at Chris.

"Volcano, huh? Did Carla help you?" Dad asks, ruffling Chris's hair. "Yes! She kept messing it up though!" He says. "I did not mess it up! I showed you things have flaws." Carla says as she comes from the living room. I laugh slightly, shaking my head.

As we shared stories and laughter around the table, I felt a sense of normality settling in. It was comforting to connect over the small things, even if just for a moment.
