"Hey Ma, Happy Fourth of July." Shaun says in to the phone.
"Thank you baby, what are your plans for the day?" She asks.
"A friend of ours is throwing a big beach party in about an hour. What about you?"
"Your father fired up the grill and is starting to season the ribs. We invited some friends and family for a little barbecue in the backyard."
Shaun licks his lips, the thought of missing his dads barbecue ribs makes his stomach growl. "Man,tell dad to save me some of those ribs. I'll be looking forward to them when we come home next week."
"Alright I'll tell him," she chuckles. "Oh letters from some colleges came in the mail, do you want me to open them?"
"No," he says as his stomach twists into knots. "I'd rather wait until I get home." To be disappointed, he wants to add.
"Ok," his mom says softly. "Shaun you know whatever happens with college, your father and I still love you and there's still other options out there."
"Yeah I know, I'm just nervous." He paces back and forth in his room.
"When you come home we can open them together, ok?"
"Ok, thanks mom." He smiles, feeling a little more comfortable from his moms voice.
"Well I won't hold you up, have fun tonight."
"Ok, you have fun too. And don't forget about my ribs."
She laughs, "bye baby."
"Bye ma,"
Shaun hangs up the phone and lets out a deep breath. Knowing that those college letters are at home waiting for him makes him feel stressed. Most people got their college acceptance letters months ago while he was placed on the waiting list for each college he applied to. He hadn't worried about it a few months ago, but it will be August next month and he still doesn't know where he's going or what he wants to do with his life. College doesn't even seem that appealing to him.
Banging on his room door makes Shaun grateful for the distraction. He opens his door to see Ty waiting on the other side with an huge American flag top hat on his head. "We're getting ready to walk down to the beach." He says.
"Alright, I just got off the phone with my mom."
"Yeah me too, she kept going on and on about how she can't wait for us to come home, little does she know coming home is the last thing I wanna do."
"We still got a week before we head home." Shaun closes his bedroom door and they head downstairs. "So the plan is still on for tonight right? We going all out?"
"Hell yeah," Ty smirks. "No chill tonight. We're gonna---"
He stops talking when they reach the living room and find Kat and Monica singing Party in the USA at the top of their lungs and dancing around the room.
"Cuz I put my hands up, they're playing me song, they know I'm gonna be ok. Yeaaaaah it's a party in the USA."
"Neither of y'all can sing, shut up." Shaun tells them. "Don't quit your day job."
Kat sticks her tongue out at him, "When are we leaving? I'm ready to hit the beach."
"Seriously, the water is calling my name." Monica adds.
"Obviously, since you're practically naked." Ty says towards her nautical navy striped bathing suit top and white shorts. Her red hair makes her look like a human form of the American flag.
