The ride to his sisters house feels extra long. Maybe it's because it's humid outside and the a/c is broken. Maybe it's because his dad won't change the radio station so they can stop listening to house music. Maybe it's because he still hasn't told them that Neveah isn't his daughters after all.
It's been three days. Three days since Aubrey dropped the bomb on Keenan. Three days since his heart was truly broken into a million pieces. Three days since innocent Neveah caused him so much pain. He hasn't had the heart to relay the news to his parents or anyone else other than Janine yet. It's embarrassing, to know that he took care of someone else's baby. He fell in love with Aubrey and she stabbed him in the back then twisted the knife. It's the worst feeling he's ever experienced. Worst than jail time. Worse than losing Sevyn. It just hurts.
When they finally arrive at his sister Kiara's house for a planned lunch with her and her boyfriend, Keenan hops out the car too eagerly. Being cramped in the car with a secret dancing on the tip of his tongue was too much. This open air feels great and gives him room to breath.
"Hi everyone," Kiara beams once she flings open the door. She exchanges hugs with her parents and little brother.
"Baby you're glowing, what's going on?" Her mother asks.
Kiara just smiles even more. "I can't tell you yet. I'll tell you once you've started eating. Marcus set up everything on the porch out back, go on." She ushers them through the hall. As Keenan goes to walk past her she grab his collar. "Hold on, something's wrong with this picture." He looks at her confused and she looks around like she's searching for something. "Where's my baby at? I haven't seen Nevy in the longest."
Even though she just saw her last week, Keenan doesn't bother to mention that. He waits until his parents are out of ear shot before replying. "You won't be seeing her anymore."
"Why? Did something happen with you and Aubrey? Is she moving back to Florida?"
Keenan wishes it was that simple. "Aubrey lied to me...about everything. Neveah isn't my mine."
"What!?" Kiara screams.
Keenan puts a finger to his lips. "I didnt tell mom or dad yet." He hisses. "But yeah, she told me a couple days ago."
"Keenan I don't understand. How is she not yours? Didnt Aubrey move here for you?" Kiara asks.
"Turns out she only moved here to get away from her real baby daddy. She didn't want him to know she was pregnant with his baby so she came here and pinned it on me." He feels his self growing angry again.
Kiara swipes at her bangs falling into her eyes. "That bitch," she mutters. "Who does shit like that?"
"That's what I'm saying." Keenan scoffs.
"Wow Keenan, I'm sorry." She says. "I think you should tell mom and down in a little while since we're all together."
"Yeah I will." He says. "It's just embarrassing to have to admit."
Kiara pats his shoulder understandingly then puts an arm around him. They walk through the hallway and pass the kitchen to the porch where a long white table is laid out with salad, sandwiches, potato salad, fruit and ice tea.
"Aye Keenan!" Marcus says standing up to dap him.
"Marky Mark," Keenan smiles. "Whats up?"
"Nothing really, just coolin. What about you, how's school?" Marcus asks.
Keenan sits down and starts making himself a plate. "It's going well. I passed all my classes, my lowest grade was a C in math but I'm managing. Also ready to start senior year."
