Ty sits on the porch staring at the traffic passing by the house. A warm breeze blows through the air, reminding him that summer is over and soon it will be too cold to sit outside like this. The leaves will change colors and fall off the trees, then snow will follow it. For the first time ever, he won't be home to help his parents rake the leaves or clear the snow from the driveway. He'll be living on campus where the leaves are already rakes the snow has already been cleared. Even though it was tiring, he's going to miss raking and shoveling with Malcolm and Sevyn because it usually resulted in a race to make the biggest leave pile or turned into a snowball fight.
Tomorrow he'll be riding up to school to start a new chapter in his life. He's the last one to leave the nest. All his friends and Malcolm have already moved in to their dorms.
Corey was the first to leave the nest since he had to drive down to Brown. They helped him pack up all his belongings and load up the car Tuesday morning. It was a bittersweet moment for everyone. They were proud that he decided to attend his dream school, despite the problems he faced in the past, but it was sad knowing he was going to be far away and they probably wouldn't see him again until Thanksgiving. Watching Sevyn hold on to him as he hugged her made Ty's heart ache. He was her best friend and a make-shift brother for her. It was just a reminder that the crew was officially beginning to go their separate ways. Malcolm was finally able to pry Sevyn off Corey so he could climb into his car. He thanked the Harris family for allowing him to live with them until school ended before heading off down the road.
Shaun and Malcolm both left Thursday morning. On his way to school, Shaun stopped by the house to say goodbye to everyone. He seemed a little emotional as he gave everyone a hug, lingering on Ty for a moment. He held a smile on his face but his eyes were conflicted as if he wasn't completely sure he wanted to go or not. Sevyn clung to him too which is surprise because those two usually can't go two minutes around each other without it resulting in some kind of nonsense argument or teasing. He hugged her though and promised to come back and beat up anyone if they came at her the wrong way. She returned the favor by promising to keep him updated on anything regarding Carson. After cracking a few jokes about hiding his diploma and going back to high school, Shaun left with his parents.
Then it was time to bring Malcolm to school. The ride was spent with their parents reminiscing on stories about Malcolm and Ty as kids and all the trouble they would get in too. Sevyn spent the time talking about all the times Malcolm and Ty annoyed her to the point where she wished she was the only child, but now she wishes she could go back to those days. Pulling up to the actual college made Ty tense up at the sight of the huge campus and all the freshmen moving in. As long as they've been alive, he and Malcolm have never been apart for very long. Wherever one went, the other was usually right beside him. They were going to be apart for the first time ever, something that Ty wasn't so sure he would be able to do.
Sevyn cried before they left and Ty would be lying if he said he didn't tear up a little bit too. He was leaving his twin at this strange new school in this new environment with these new people. What would Malcolm do without him? What would he do without Malcolm? There were so many questions in his head that he just didn't have the answer for, but after hugging his brother and assuring him that if he ever needed a partner in crime all he had to do was call, Ty knew they were both gonna be alright.
Returning to the house without Malcolm was weird, his missing presence was definitely noticeable and still is. Ty woke up this morning expecting Malcolm to join him at the table for breakfast and when he didn't Ty had to chuckle to himself. Things really have changed.
"Hey," Monica appears in front of him, he didn't even notice her pull into the driveway. "You look a little lonely."
He would never admit it, but he is and happy that she's here. "Sevyn is over at Jackson's house and my mom went to the mall. I think she's using retail therapy to cope with Malcolm leaving and then me going tomorrow."
