The pile of letters sitting on his desk taunt him each time he looks at them. There's five letters in all and the more he thinks about opening them, the more he doesn't want to open them. Shaun looks at the clock, it reads 3:45. His mom get off work in fifteen minutes and will be home in about twenty. He knows she wants to hear about his college plans and so far, he has none. Depending on what these letters have to say, college might not even be a choice for him.
Finishing his bottle of Gatorade, Shaun finally takes the letter off his desk and sits down on the edge of his bed and shuffles them around in his hands. Laying them face down beside him, he randomly grabs a letter and tears it open. It's from the University of Connecticut, known for their exceptional basketball team. His pulls the paper out of the letter and reads it carefully.
"Dear Shaun,
Thank you for applying to our school, we have reviewed your application and come to a final conclusion. We regret to inform you that you have not been selected to join our university this coming semester....
Shaun crumples up the letter and tosses it into the trash before moving on to the next one. This one is from Beamon College in Massachusetts. He opens the letter and skims it.
"Dear Shaun,
We have reviewed your application for this semester and have to decline your acceptance to...."
Shaun crumples that one too and throws it into the garbage, slowly feeling his hope dying. He opens the next letter and reads quickly, expecting nothing but more disappointment. The first word catches his eyes.
"Congratulations!" His eyes widens as he continues to read.
"Dear Shaun,
Welcome to the University of Danton...."
Shaun stops reading and jumps to his feet excitedly. His first college acceptance letter! He did it, he got accepted into college. "Take that Mrs. Doogal!" He exclaims, referring to his history teacher last school year. He glances over at the other two letters waiting to be opening. Setting aside his acceptance letter like it's a trophy, he opens the next one.
"Dear Shaun,
We regret to inform you that...."
His face falls when he realizes that he has been declined entrance into Bailey University that's located a few towns away. Moving on to the last letter, he tears open the envelope anxiously.
"Congratulations Mr. Baker,
Smith Community College welcomes you with open arms."
Shaun stares at his two acceptance letters happily. He didn't think he would get into any of the schools he applied to, yet he's holding two acceptance letters in his hands. Two colleges will happily take him, one of which has a decent basketball team too. Grabbing his phone, he dials Ty's number. The two rings seem like forever until he finally answers.
"Hello?" Ty's voice sounds dead like he just worked a graveyard shift.
"Guess who's going to college?? ME, ya boy made it! We out here bro!" Shaun shouts into the phone, knowing his neighbors must think he's crazy.
"Congratulations bro, I'm proud of you." Ty says, but his voice doesn't sound as hype as Shaun expected.
"You good, why you sound like you're listening to Drake in a dark room while sipping wine?" He asks.
Ty chuckles dryly, "Lemme tell you about Talia. So we were---"
Shaun hears his mom pull into the driveway and he grabs his letters. "I'll call you back." Shaun hangs up on him and runs downstairs before his mother can get into the house. He skids into the living room and his dad looks at him like he's crazy. He just beams while holding his letters behind his back.
