An entire week has gone by without hearing from Aubrey. Keenan is over the worrying phase and has slowly started to accept the fact that she's out there somewhere, not wanting to be found. He's convinced that she'll come home when she's ready and for now, he just has to be strong for his daughter.
Since the interview with Mickey, Keenan has been offered more radio interviews and even a few local news channels have reached out to him in hopes of getting him on the show to talk about his music. The attention is a good distraction for him and he brings Neveah with him to each interview to show that's she's an important part of his life and he isn't trying to hide her away from everyone.
"Are you going to Ty and Malcolm's party tonight?" Janine asks, flipping through the Oprah magazine his mother left on the table.
"They're having a party?" Keenan questions.
"Mhm, a graduation slash birthday party. It's at this club on the south end, I heard it's the place to be if you're eighteen."
"You're not eighteen,"
"Yeah but I'm on the list, he put me and Carson on there since, you know, our parents are kinda in love or whatever." She rolls her eyes playfully.
"Am I on the list?"
Janine shrugs, "Maybe...I can ask if you want."
"Nah, I think me and the twins are better off at safe distances. They never looked at me the same since that night at Macy's party, and I don't blame them." Keenan scratches the back of his neck. In a way, he really does miss the twins and Shaun and Corey. They had good times when they were together, even if it was something simple like playing video games on the couch or hanging at the basketball courts. His friends were good company and he misses having people like that around him. He's grateful for Janine and Carson of course, but he wishes he had his boys back.
Janine gives him a disappointed look, "Are you sure? I think you could use some party time to ease your mind."
"I think I'm good for now." He says, and as soon as the words leave his mouth, Neveah starts crying upstairs. He sighs and rubs his eyes, "I just laid her down to sleep fifteen minutes ago."
"She probably just misses her mom, you know babies can sense when their mom is around and she probably hasn't sensed that in a while. It's only been a week since Aubrey went missing but to Neveah it feels like forever." She tells him. "I'll go get her, she probably just needs a women's touch."
"Thank you," Keenan appreciates Janine helping him out so much. She pats his shoulder then gets up from the couch and heads upstairs to tend to Neveah. Keenan turns on the TV and flips through some channels in hopes of finding something good to watch. His parents are both at work so he has the house to himself for a while. He lands on 8 Mile, the movie about Eminem's life and decides to watch that, even though he's seen it a thousand times. Something about Eminem coming up from his struggle moves him every time he watches it and works as a motivator to keep working hard on his dreams.
Janine comes back downstairs a few minutes later and sits next to him. "I rocked her back to sleep, she should be good for a while." Keenan nods and continues watching the movie, Janine groans once she realizes what's on. "8 Mile again? You should know every scene word from word, and so should I."
Keenan can't help but laugh. When they were together, every time Janine let him pick a movie he would pick 8 Mile. It got to the point where Janine could mouth along every word that comes out of the actors mouths or she would remix his lyrics and make up something goofy. She grew to hate this movie and Eminem.
"I can't believe we're going back to school next month." She says, "It sucks because I haven't really done much this summer. I had this huge bucket list and you know what I did? Watched Netflix and eat."
