As soon as Keenan opens the door to leave his house, he's met by a pair of cat like green eyes, complimented by a short and curvy frame.
"Hey Keenan," Kehlani Peters leans against the door frame smiling up at him with a pearly white smile and playing with a strand of her black hair. She's a pretty mix of black and Malaysian, standing five feet tall with dark brown skin and square framed glasses.
"Hi...Kehlani." He says slowly. She's a junior at his school and he only knows her name because he's seen her play volleyball with Sevyn a few times. "How did you, um, find out where I live?"
"I asked your chemistry partner from last year." She replies. "I'm sorry if that sounds a little creepy."
"Just a little," He replies making her laugh. "What's up?"
"I just wanted to know if you're busy today." She answers.
Keenan shakes his head. "Um no, I was just going to visit my sister in a little while. Why?"
"Some people from school are having a party at the beach. I was wondering if you wanted to come." She says. Keenan raises his eyebrows. He's never talked to Kehlani a day in his life and suddenly she shows up at his house inviting him to a party.
"Why me?" He narrows his eyes suspiciously.
"Word on the street is that you and Aubrey are over. So that means you're on the market. And lets be honest, now that the twins, Shaun and Corey are gone, that makes you the second hottest boy in school." Khelani continues playing with that strand of hair, twirling it around her finger over and over.
"Second?" He asks.
"Yeah, Jackson is first but only because he's on the basketball team. I have a thing for athletes." She replies and Keenan admires her honesty. "So, what do you say?"
Figuring that this is the first party he's been invited to since summer vacation started, he might as well accept the offer and go have some fun at the beach. "I'll go change into my trunks."
"Great, we can ride together. I'll drive, I got my license two months ago and I love it."
"Congrats. Um, come in and I'll run upstairs and change." He steps to the side to allow Khelani in. She breezes past him, giving him a whiff of mango scented body lotion. Keenan closes the door and jogs back upstairs, making a quick stop in his mothers room.
"Change of plans mom, I'm not going to Kiara's house." He tosses her the keys and she catches them effortlessly.
"Why, what happened?" She asks.
"I'm going to the beach...with Khelani." He turns and quickly heads to his room to change. He doesn't want to keep Khelani waiting for too long.
Just as he's about to drop his pants, his mother walks in. "Ma!" He exclaims, clenching his pants tightly.
"Who is Khelani?" His mother asks.
"A girl from school, she's a junior."
Her eyebrows raise. "Oh, are you two friends?"
"More like acquaintances," Keenan shrugs. "Do you want to meet her? She's downstairs."
His mother glances down the hall like Khelani may come upstairs at any moment, then closes his door. "You've never mentioned her before."
"Well we never interacted before. She literally showed up out of no where and invited me to a beach party, with kids from school." He replies, and judging by the look on his face he can tell she's deep in thought.
"Look, I'm glad that you're open to making new friends after all you've been through but, I want you to be careful." She tells him. He makes a face and she continues. "After Janine giving you those drugs and Aubrey lying about Neveah, I'm starting to doubt how well your judgment of character is."
