AlthoughMoiraine doesn't want to leave Lan's side, her sisters don't give her a choice.Kerene has questions and demands answers.
"Stay with her!" Kerene climbed into the wagon, embracing Saidar.
Moiraine couldn't breathe. Lan. Her Warder. He was gone. Dead because of her. It had been her mistake, yet he had paid the price. It wasn't fair. It should have been her. She had used Saidar, knowing she shouldn't channel in Tear. Light, Lan had reminded her not to use it only a few hours before the incident happened!
"Moiraine." Alanna kneeled beside her, stroking calmly over the Cairhien woman's hair. "I'm so sorry."
But the woman of the Blue Ajah didn't respond. She didn't want to hear the pity in Alanna's voice or her comfort. Her Warder was dead! He was gone while she was still there!
"You need to breathe, Moiraine." The Green Sister cupped her friend's cheek, though she couldn't pull Moiraine's eyes on her nor make the woman breathe again. "Please."
Devastated, the Cairhien woman closed her eyes. She didn't want to breathe. She wanted to embrace the darkness, which would send her to wherever Lan's soul was – reunite them again. How could the wheel separate them?
Suddenly, the bond flickered. Lan's presence returned in the back of her mind, pain filling her from his side of the bond.
Shaking, the Aes Sedai took a deep breath. Lan! When she lifted her head and opened her eyes, her vision was a blur. Tears she hadn't noticed forming clouded her vision, so she had to blink until she saw the wagon again.
Kerene had embraced Saidar, her hands pressed on Lan's chest. She had healed him! "Lan." Her voice was still not louder than a whisper, but Moiraine didn't care. She wanted her Warder! Although every cell in her body was protesting against the movement, the Aes Sedai forced herself back on her feet. She needed to feel the Malkieri's heartbeat.
"Don't." It was Alanna who held her back again. "Give Kerene some room until a Yellow Sister arrives. You're exhausted, Moiraine."
"Does she need healing?"
Another sister had arrived, but Moiraine didn't care. All that mattered was Lan. Luckily, the Green Sister was occupied by the new woman, allowing the Blue to escape her grip and step closer to the wagon.
"The Warder needs your help first. Kerene stepped in, or we would have lost him a moment ago. Moiraine!"
Moiraine almost screamed when Alanna stopped her again. She was so close, yet it felt like Lan was miles away from her. But all her attempts to free herself were useless. Her friend wouldn't let her go.
"I'll look after the Warder."
The Yellow Sister told Kerene to step aside, and the Sitter of the Hall left the wagon. "He breathes again," the Green told Moiraine while grabbing her arm.
"Please." Moiraine didn't care that she was begging. If only they would let her see Lan! "Let me go with them."
But Kerene shook her head. "There is nothing you can do right now. Allow the Yellow Ajah to heal your Warder while we take care of you. You look terrible."
"I can't... Lan... I have to-"
"You come with us, sister," the older woman cut her off quickly. "Alanna Sedai has offered to share her tent with you. We will check on you and prepare you for the Amyrlin Seat. She will want to talk to you once she hears about your appearance. Alanna."
