Thistime, we find out what Lan had been thinking during that scene.

Quietly, Lan watched how the sheepherder disappeared behind doors, which led him to the Amyrlin Seat. He hoped his preparations had been enough. Rand had somehow listened to him, but... Lan had doubts about how much the boy would remember when he stood before the famous Amyrlin Seat. Siuan Sanche wasn't just any Aes Sedai and she knew who Rand was.

Sighing, the uncrowned king of Malkier turned around and left. There was nothing he could do to help Rand anymore. Siuan had insisted on meeting the Dragon should he indeed be in Cairhien when they arrived. In the meantime, Lan would try talking to Moiraine, who already had her meeting with Siuan, hoping she would listen to him.

What had they talked about? Had Siuan been able to reason with Moiraine? Would the woman of the Blue Ajah finally allow them to help her?

While the uncrowned king of Malkier walked through the corridors, he remembered how he went to the Damodred residence that morning.

Curiously, Lan walked through the streets of Cairhien. Siuan had told him where he would find the house Moiraine had grown up, and he couldn't wait to see it. What would her family be like?

He had Siuan's official request with him, so the Damodreds wouldn't suspect he had anything to hide. But as long as Moiraine didn't open the door, Lan should be fine.

When the Malkieri found the door, he raised his hand to draw it appreciatively over the Damodred sign. A tree with a crown over the treetop. It was beautiful.

Quickly, Lan knocked before someone would find his behavior suspicious. Moiraine couldn't know he was in Cairhien before she had spoken to Siuan. An old man opened the door.

"Can I help you, Sir?"

"I'm here on behalf of the Amyrlin Seat – the Watcher of the Seals, the Flame of Tar Valon."

The man's eyes widened. "The Amyrlin Seat? What could she want from-?"

"I have a message for Moiraine Sedai."

At Lan's words, the man paled. The Malkieri wondered if that man was somehow related to his bonded Aes Sedai, but he couldn't find any resemblances.

"It's still very early in the morning, and my lady is... well, I'm afraid she is still sleeping." So, he was a servant and not a relative of Moiraine. "But if you give me the message, I will ensure to inform my lady once she's awake."

"I'm awake, Jhonas. Who's at the door?"

Lan's heart stopped for a moment when he heard a female voice answering, but he relaxed once he realized it wasn't Moiraine.

A woman appeared behind the old man. Lan would've assumed her to be the wife of the man before him, but she wore a fine dress and jewelry only a lady could wear. And if that hadn't told him she was a noblewoman, her posture would have told him by then. Her back was straight, and she held her chin high, challenging him to say the wrong thing. Moiraine had acted the same whenever they had appeared at a formal occasion.

But it was the woman's eyes that told him he was talking to Moiraine's sister. They both had the same blue eyes. She gave him a hard look, yet he could see the clever mind behind those eyes. The Damodred sisters weren't ones you could fool easily.

Hopefully, Siuan was right about Moiraine not having a good relationship with her family, or otherwise, it was possible that the woman before him saw right through him.
