Lanand Siuan debate what to do next and how to catch Moiraine in their net.
When Lan told Siuan how he had found Moiraine at the Eye of the World and her announcement of being stilled, the poor woman turned pale and sat.
Of course, she didn't stay seated for long. Once he mentioned how Moiraine had started to distance herself from him in the last few months, Siuan jumped to her feet again, pacing the room while mumbling something inaudible.
He finished his report by telling her about his last conversation with the Cairhien woman, his failure to protect Moiraine as her Warder, and her threat of letting Alanna take his bond by force should he refuse to go with the Green Sister.
"She did what?" Again, Siuan had turned pale.
"I think she had thought about that plan for a while because Alanna appeared just when Moiraine decided to leave us. Moiraine must have asked her for help."
The Amyrlin cursed and wrang her hands in anger. "I can't believe she threatened you like that. Moiraine has never... and to think about letting another Aes Sedai take your bond without your permission... no Aes Sedai has done that in ages. It's unbelievable to think she was willing to give you up – without even asking what you want!"
"Like I said, Moiraine tried to push me away as best as possible."
"That's the harshest way I know to push someone away." Siuan continued to walk up and down while moving her fingers over her lips, thinking about her next words. "So... stilled. Are you certain?"
"No."
Surprised, she met his eyes. "No?"
"Moiraine believes it, but I have doubts. Even if it was the father of lies at the Eye of the World – something I don't doubt because Moiraine is usually right – even a Forsaken isn't strong enough to cut someone off from the One Power. It takes eight Aes Sedai to do it. A Forsaken is stronger than a single Aes Sedai but stronger than eight?" Lan shook his head. "No, something feels wrong to me. There must be another explanation for Moiraine's loss of Saidar."
"Could the boy have something to do with her condition? Is it possible he used Saidin on her?"
Lan furrowed his forehead. "Rand? No. The boy wouldn't hurt Moiraine. Besides, he never channeled before he went to the Eye of the World. I doubt he knows how to use the One Power to hurt anyone at all." Then he sighed. "But I don't know what he did at the Eye of the World. When I arrived, Rand was already gone, and I assumed him dead."
Suddenly, Siuan was back, standing before him. "Which reminds me, why weren't you at the Eye of the World? Why haven't you been with Moiraine? Why has she been alone with the boy?"
The uncrowned king of Malkier lowered his head in shame. He had waited for the Amyrlin to ask about his activities in Fal Dara and would accept any punishment she thought fit. "I allowed myself to get distracted," Lan said quietly. "I assumed we had a plan to continue in the morning and allowed myself to leave my Aes Sedai's side for one night. It was a terrible mistake I regret deeply."
"Distracted?" Siuan raised a skeptical eyebrow. "By a woman?" When Lan didn't answer, she nodded. "I see. Nynaeve, I assume."
Shocked, the Malkieri met the eyes of the Tairen woman. "How do you-?"
"Moiraine told me about your little... 'traveling companion', who followed you from Shadar Lagoth to Tar Valon. And about your feelings for her."
"It was one night, and Moiraine pushed me to...." When the look on Siuan's face didn't change, Lan sighed heavily. "I believed one night wouldn't hurt. I was proven wrong and regret it since then."
