Lanremembers a moment of vulnerability of Moiraine.

Lan continued his lonely walk through the village. He was surprised that neither Ihvon nor Maksim had tried to find him already, though he was glad for it. He wasn't in the mood for another pep talk. No, Lan needed to think – think about Ihvon's words.

The rest of the world only sees their power. We see their weakness.

The uncrowned king of Malkier had remembered his Aes Sedai's weaknesses. She was no different than any other human being at that. But there was another side of Moiraine almost no one knew about – except for Siuan. The Cairhien woman had a vulnerable side. It rarely showed, and most of the time, Moiraine kept it locked away, but sometimes it broke through and it had been Lan who had caught her. Like the time when she and Siuan had a big public fight, and Moiraine and Lan ran from the White Tower.

"Lan!"

Surprised, the uncrowned king of Malkier lifted his head, seeing his bondholder standing in the corridor. He had been training with Stepin and Ihvon for the last couple of hours. The two Warders had become good friends of his, though they barely saw each other due to Moiraine and Lan's long travels.

Moiraine had had a meeting with the Blue Ajah and the new Amyrlin, and Lan hadn't expected to see her again before night fell. But it wasn't the sight of her that surprised him the most. It was the stern look on her face and the fire in her eyes. The woman of the Blue Ajah was clearly upset, and that happened rarely.

Confused, the Warder let go of Ko'di and winced slightly when her presence and feelings returned with full force. Blood and ashes! The situation was even worse than he had assumed. Moiraine was pissed like he had never seen her before. What had happened?

"Dear light. Moiraine Sedai looks angry," Ihvon murmured. "What did you do, Lan?"

"I don't want to switch places with you, my friend," Stepin sighed. "Do you want us to injure you so you have an excuse to let her cool down before you go to her?"

Lan raised an eyebrow at his friends while moving into a relaxing stand. "You want to pretend to injure me? And you don't think she sees right through it? As if you have ever succeeded in beating me."

Stepin grinned. "There's a first time for everything, my friend."

"Besides, don't be so arrogant," Ihvon added. "There have been multiple times when we disarmed you."

"Hmm," Lan agreed, humming with a slight smile on his face. "And how many Warders had been necessary for that?"

Stepin chuckled while Ihvon growled at Lan. They all knew it had needed six Warders to bring the Malkieri to his knees.

"Lan!"

A wave of anger rolled over the man from the Borderlands. Light, Moiraine was indeed in a bad mood! What could make her so angry?

"You shouldn't keep her waiting," Stepin whispered while cleaning an invisible spot on the blade of his ax. "Whatever pissed her off... you shouldn't make it worse by letting her wait. Kerene once punished me an entire day with silence and masked the bond until I begged her to let me back in. Women know how to punish you."

For a moment, the Malkieri thought about telling his friend that Moiraine wasn't like Kerene but then remembered his bondholder's past mood changes. Perhaps Stepin was right.

Lan nodded at his friends one last time, then walked over to his pissed Aes Sedai. It seemed like Moiraine was trembling in rage. Worry made Lan's stomach turn. He didn't like those feelings.
