Moiraineand Lan bond again, and their emotions run wild.
Quote: "The only reason that I was able to say that you're not my equal... is that I've known one thing to be true since the first day we met. You have always been my better." (Moiraine)
It had been hours since Lanfear threw Moiraine and Lan out of the Ways. Since then, they had left the water, walking beside it while hoping to find a city or anything that would tell them where they were.
The Aes Sedai led the way, though it seemed as if she was running while the Warder tried to keep up with her. Well, if Moiraine was honest with herself, then she had to admit that she was running.
After leaving the water, Lan had followed her, but she felt him staring for quite a while. Something was burning under his nails, and the Cairhien woman was afraid to hear it since she wasn't sure she could handle it.
The uncrowned king of Malkier had helped her escape from Cairhien, yet he also had plotted with Siuan against her.
And don't forget he was the one realizing you've been shielded, not stilled by Ishamael.
Moiraine gritted her teeth at her inner voice. Light! Had that been necessary?! As if she didn't already feel bad about how she had treated the man in Fal Dara and Tifan's Well. Was it really necessary to remind her about what he had done for her – despite her cruel behavior?
"The bond. We're going to talk about it?"
A shiver ran over Moiraine's back. The bond. She was surprised Lan had managed to stay quiet for such a long time. Honestly, she had expected him to ask sooner, but Lan wasn't so stupid to ask her to channel in the Ways. And since they had been thrown out of the Ways, Moiraine was pretty much running from him. No, it was time to face his questions.
The woman of the Blue Ajah hoped her voice wouldn't tremble when she turned her head around to look at the Malkieri. Her feet never stopped walking. It was better that Lan stayed away from her. She didn't trust her own body.
"Do you really want it back? After everything I've done to you."
How could Lan still want her? Moiraine had hurt him badly with her words. And even though she regretted them since they left her lips, she couldn't undo the damage.
"I never asked for my bond to be released, nor will I."
Quickly, the Aes Sedai turned her head away from the Warder before he could see the pain in her eyes. No, that wonderful man hadn't asked to be released from his duty – to be released from her. Instead, he had done everything in his power to repair what they had lost. What had she done to deserve that man?
A quiet sigh escaped Moiraine's lips, and she lowered her head slightly. Lan. Why did he have to ask? Why couldn't he go to the White Tower to be with Nynaeve like she had planned for him? Moiraine didn't deserve his loyalty and friendship.
"Stop pretending, Moiraine."
His words made the Cairhien woman almost laugh. Pretending. Wasn't that what she did for decades? She followed the path the wheel had woven for her whether she liked it or not. What would she give for turning back time? Returning to the moment before she and Siuan entered Gitara's rooms – before they heard about the prophecy. They had a plan for their future.
And I'm going to be your fishwife?
Moiraine had loved the idea of becoming Siuan's wife. They hadn't wanted much. A little hut by the river and lots of time to themselves. Why weren't they allowed to have that? What did they do to deserve that fate?
